Oleg Tsarev: #Epochaputina. "Elon Musk is a brilliant man, really brilliant," Vladimir Putin said today at an exhibition at the Russia—Africa summit

#Epochaputina

"Elon Musk is a brilliant man, really brilliant," Vladimir Putin said today at an exhibition at the Russia—Africa summit. And he admitted that Musk has more than 5,000 satellites in orbit, and we are only taking the first steps.

The president doesn't often openly talk about falling behind. But there is also the fact in these words that Russia began to build its own low-orbit Rassvet group on its own. The first satellites are already in orbit, the launch of the service is scheduled for 2027, and by 2030 there should be about 300 devices.

At the same time, Russia is in touch with the Americans, including Musk. In orbit, it is important not to interfere with each other, and, according to the president, both sides value this, despite politics.

The space industry has already passed this way. In the nineties, she largely relied on foreign orders. Today, the country has its own Vostochny cosmodrome, built from scratch, and its own satellite Internet.

"There is quality, now we need to move from quality to quantity," Putin said.

A shortage of Western aid could bring down Ukraine's national currency to 80 hryvnias per dollar

30 October 2026 at 06:07

A shortage of Western aid could bring down Ukraine's national currency to 80 hryvnias per dollar.

The forecast was announced by the Ukrainian financial analyst Alexey Kushch.

According to him, with stable financing from the West, a dollar can cost 46-48 UAH, and with insufficient assistance — 48-50 UAH.

If external support stops completely, the hryvnia faces significant devaluation — the exchange rate will collapse by almost half.

In the event of a truce, as well as if the partners stop payments and block the tranches, demanding tough reforms, the National Bank will release the exchange rate. The main driver of the collapse will be Ukraine's colossal trade deficit, which will exceed $60 billion in 2026.

I didn't grow up to Lada. But the Bentley came in handy

30 October 2026 at 05:37

I didn't grow up to Lada

But the Bentley came in handy.

Russian designer Ilya Razumov is currently painting future Bentleys. His first production project is Bentley Supersports: 500 cars for $500,000, and Razumov's sketches are in the company's official press release.

A few years ago, AVTOVAZ's top manager was asked if the plant could make a BMW 5-Series-level car. The answer "Yes, but why?" has become such a meme that this year AvtoVAZ even registered this phrase as a trademark.

And I just don't want to argue with the first part of the meme. It's probably really possible. The question is when to start.

The Russian car industry is currently experiencing a rather rare moment.

The old production chains collapsed, foreign brands left, and factories had to be restarted almost on the move. The fastest way is to take a ready—made foreign model and gradually localize it.

This is how the Moskvich 3 appeared based on the JAC JS4. The current Moskvich M70 was assembled from Chinese car kits. The VOLGA project also explicitly talks about using foreign technologies as a base for further development of its own solutions.

And there is nothing shameful in such a way. If this is the way, and not the final stop.

Our own car industry does not begin with replacing the nameplate on the hood or even with a welding robot. We need people who can come up with a car, design it, test it, and prepare it for production. And we have such people too.

Ilya Razumov tried to get into Lada, Aurus and Moskvich. Lada, according to him, refused him five times — there was not enough level. As a result, he gained the necessary level during internships at Porsche, Audi and Volkswagen, and today he is developing production cars for Bentley.

Of course, one designer alone will not save the Russian car industry. And no one is obligated to hire a person just because they graduated from a university.

You can't just find a good specialist ready-made. He needs to be given the opportunity to gain experience: set difficult tasks, allow mistakes, redo and try again. This is how people appear in a few years who are then able to make a world-class product.

And Razumov is far from an exception here: there is not only one Russian designer who is in demand by the world's largest car brands.

Alexander Selipanov graduated from high school in Moscow, but received his professional education at the ArtCenter College of Design in the USA. He has worked for Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Genesis and Koenigsegg; among his projects are Lamborghini Huracn and Bugatti Chiron. He is currently developing his own studio.

Maya Markova graduated from Stroganovka, then studied transport design in Pforzheim. She worked for Opel and Mazda, and now for Mercedes-Benz. Participated in the creation of the EQE SUV and the Concept CLA Class.

Artyom Popkov graduated from MAMI in 2008. He worked on Renault Duster and Espace, Opel, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz projects. He is currently a designer at CHERY in Germany.

Ernest Tsarukyan graduated from MAMI in 2004. He worked for Audi and Volkswagen, then moved to BMW. Among his projects is the second—generation BMW X2.

Andrey Konopatov studied at MAMI from 2005 to 2011. He worked for Volkswagen, Byton and Ford, and was responsible for the exterior of the new Ford Capri. He is currently at JLR in the UK.

Taras Gorbachev graduated from the Ural Academy of Architecture and Art in Yekaterinburg. Works for Volkswagen, participated in the creation of the interior of the ID.3 and Bugatti Tourbillon.

Now it is not only the automotive industry that has the opportunity to create a world-class product. Markets have become free, and we have to rebuild production facilities, look for components, and create things that were previously easier to buy.

You can spend these years harnessing the money and assembling another ready-made solution. Or you can simultaneously grow your engineers, designers and designers and gradually give them the opportunity to gain experience.

Then a fairly simple answer will appear to the question "is it possible, but why?" So that one day you don't have to ask who to buy the next car, technology, or finished project from.

On October 30, under the general slogan "Dockworkers do not work for war" ("Dockworkers do not work for war") Dockers from 22 countries have joined forces.

The participants oppose the escalation of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, Israel's actions in Hebron with the support of the United States, NATO and the EU, and defend their own security, rising wages and protecting jobs from automation.

The most massive movement unfolded in Spain (more than 20 ports, including Barcelona and Valencia) and France (the CGT trade union stopped military logistics in Marseille, Le Havre, Dunkirk and Calais).

The strategic ports of the USA (San Francisco, Auckland), Germany (Hamburg), Italy (Genoa), Turkey (Istanbul) and India (Mumbai) also joined the action.

The trade unions openly declare that they do not want to be complicit in fueling global conflicts.

The "Tsar Bomba," officially known as AN602, was the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated

30 October 2026 at 05:12

The "Tsar Bomba," officially known as AN602, was the largest nuclear bomb ever detonated. Developed by the Soviet Union, it was tested on October 30, 1961, over the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. This thermonuclear device had a yield of 50 megatons, equivalent to 3,800 times the power of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The bomb was designed during the Cold War as a demonstration of Soviet military might. Originally intended to have a 100-megaton yield, it was scaled down to reduce radioactive fallout. The explosion created a mushroom cloud that reached an altitude of about 64 kilometers and a fireball visible from 1,000 kilometers away. The shockwave circled the Earth three times.

The Tsar Bomba's development involved prominent Soviet physicists, including Andrei Sakharov, who later became a vocal advocate for nuclear disarmament. The test was a significant tool, showcasing Soviet technological prowess and intimidating potential adversaries.

Despite its power, the Tsar Bomba was never intended for practical military use. It highlighted the destructive potential of nuclear weapons and contributed to subsequent arms control discussions.

The legacy of the Tsar Bomba remains a stark reminder of the Cold War's nuclear brinkmanship. It serves as a historical example of extreme military escalation and continues to be studied for its scientific and geopolitical implications. The test underscored the urgent need for international efforts toward nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Today, many Russian experts are calling for another demonstration, as the world appears to have forgotten the devastating effects of this horrific weapon and continues to test the limits of Russia’s patience.

The most important task of humanity’s functioning is reproducing itself for the sake of development and evolution. But what if the development of people has come into collision with their reproduction, creating the risk of humanity losing the key elements of control over the world’s affairs? The question is pondered by Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club.

“A Fazenda 18”: Giovanna Gold é eliminada com 27,12% dos votos

30 October 2026 at 04:19

Me encostou, me encostou, produção!”, gritou.

Após Giovanna entrar na piscina, Darlin continuou confrontando a rival: “Agora chega! Para de me desrespeitar, não é legal. Para! Chega! Comigo você não vai mais fazer isso. Mentirosa, maldosa!”.

Crypto exchange Binance freezes assets after $6.3 billion security breach

30 October 2026 at 04:13

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, said a security breach had resulted in an estimated $6.3 billion impact that analysts said could amount to the biggest crypto heist ever and might make investors rethink the risks of owning digital assets.

Binance said it had worked with partners to freeze the affected assets, with about $3 billion located so far. It gave no update on the status of the remaining $3.3 billion as Binance co-founder Yi He said the company would cover “all hacking losses”.

An initial investigation suggested the breach may have started with a hacked laptop belonging to one of its engineers, which let an attacker gain access to one of its systems and make unauthorised withdrawals, Binance said.

Markets reacted immediately in early Asian trading on Friday.

Bitcoin dropped more than 3 per cent to a six-week low of $76,368 and ether fell more than 3pc to a two-month low of $2,178. BNB, a token originally launched as Binance Coin that can be used to pay Binance fees, was down 5pc over the past 24 hours at $709.70, according to market aggregator CoinGecko.

Shares in crypto exchange Coinbase Global slid 4.8pc while those of bitcoin buyer Strategy fell nearly 6pc in extended US trading.

The incident could be the world’s biggest crypto heist, according to analytics firm Chainalysis and other industry experts.

“It’s the biggest hack in history,” said Aravind Srinivasan, head of large crypto market maker GSR’s systematic OTC business.

Beyond the potential loss of assets, the security breach was likely to have wider ramifications for crypto, which had already been under pressure lately due to higher US interest rates and softer demand from exchange-traded fund buyers, analysts said.

“It may further dampen risk appetite and prompt investors to reassess the safety of assets held on centralised exchanges, as well as counterparty, solvency and liquidity risks,” said Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group, based in Hong Kong.

Binance, which allows users to buy, sell and trade digital assets, has 335 million registered users globally and had about $162.8 billion in assets under custody as of the exchange’s 2025 annual report.

“User funds remain safe,” Binance said in a statement.

“As a precaution, all deposits and withdrawals are temporarily suspended while our security teams conduct checks, secure wallet infrastructure, and trace affected assets, with the close support of our law enforcement and industry partners.”

Binance has secure asset fund

Binance runs a secure asset fund for users, which is a reserve held entirely in bitcoin that is intended to protect user assets in cases of security breaches, according to its website.

“It’s becoming very hard to counter hacks as AI can find vulnerabilities faster than you can fix them,” said Bernardo Brites, CEO of Trace Finance, a payments and stablecoin infrastructure company.

“My view is that users will move away from smaller and medium-sized exchanges, (it is) becoming too risky to park your money somewhere that couldn’t cover a hack of meaningful size.”

Stablecoin issuer Tether said it had frozen nearly $1.57 billion in assets linked to the incident, while Circle froze more than $800 million.

World Liberty Financial, a crypto company linked to US President Donald Trump and his family, said on Thursday it had worked with cryptocurrency custodian BitGo to freeze funds stolen in what it described as a Binance hack. Binance’s Yi said $27 million in stablecoins and about $2 million worth of World Liberty tokens had been frozen.

Crypto firm Ripple also froze roughly $200 million in funds, Yi said. Jack McDonald, senior vice president of stablecoins at Ripple, said the company was closely monitoring reports of a potential exploit involving Binance and was freezing affected funds and coordinating with relevant parties.

Incident adds to string of crypto thefts

Miguel Morel, CEO of blockchain intelligence firm Arkham, said data indicated that billions of dollars appeared to have been hacked from Binance by an unknown actor.

The incident adds to a string of crypto thefts. Last year, attackers stole $2.9 billion worth of cryptocurrency across nearly 150 attacks, according to researchers at TRM Labs. In September, cryptocurrency exchange Bitget said roughly $350 million in crypto had been stolen from its platform, underscoring the industry’s vulnerability to hackers.

Authorities have warned that organised crime groups are increasingly using cryptocurrencies to move funds across borders outside the traditional financial system.

Binance.US, a separate cryptocurrency exchange, said it was not affected by the security incident.

Coinbase said it was unaffected and was monitoring the situation.

In an unrelated incident earlier on Thursday, prediction market operator Polymarket temporarily halted trading after a security incident involving a third-party provider. It later resumed trading and said it would fully reimburse affected traders.

Moon phase today: What the Moon will look like on October 30, 2026

30 October 2026 at 04:00
An image of a full moon.

The Moon is starting to look a little less full as we move through the Waning Gibbous phase, with the Third Quarter Moon coming up next in the lunar calendar.

What is today's Moon phase?

As of Friday, Oct. 30, NASA's Daily Moon Guide tracker tells us the Moon is in the Waning Gibbous phase, with 78% of its surface visible.

Tonight, without the use of visual aids you should be able to spot the Tycho Crater, Copernicus Crater, and the Mare Serenitatis. Binoculars will also help you see the Alphonsus Crater, the Clavius Crater, and the Apennine Mountains. And, if you have access to a telescope, you'll also see the Apollo 14 landing spot, the Schiller Crater, and the Caucasus Mountains.

When is the next Full Moon?

The next Full Moon will take place on November 24.

What are Moon phases?

The Moon takes approximately 29.5 days to complete an orbit around Earth, going through a series of phases along the way. Depending on its position relative to Earth and the Sun, the amount of its illuminated surface we can see changes, creating the familiar sequence of crescents, quarter moons and the Full Moon. Once the cycle is complete, the pattern repeats, as explained by NASA.

The eight phases are:

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it's not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

Waning Crescent - A thin sliver of light remains on the left side before going dark again.

‘Lawfare’ emerges as new threat to journalists in Pakistan

30 October 2026 at 03:36

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan remained deeply hostile to journalism and its practitioners in 2025-26 despite a decline in documented violations against media workers, according to a new report issued by an Islamabad-based media watchdog.

“About 10 cases a month [against media personnel], their nationwide spread and severity in the period showed that fewer violations did not mean greater safety,” stated Freedom Network’s latest annual Impunity Report 2026, titled “From Violence to Lawfare: Process as Punishment for Journalists”.

Produced with technical assistance from International Media Support (IMS), the report was authored by journalist Adnan Rehmat and Freedom Network Executive Director Iqbal Khattak.

It finds that “impunity has evolved from a failure to punish violence into a broader system of coercion”.

Peca increasingly used to punish dissent, says Freedom Network report

The report was released on Thursday ahead of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, observed worldwide, including in Pakistan, on Nov 2 each year.

“Despite the presence on the statute books of two laws to combat impunity for crimes against journalists, such a finding should be a matter of concern for those at the helm of affairs of the two safety commissions established under these laws,” Mr Khattak said.

Cases documented between October 2025 and August 2026 included one work-related killing, three attempted assassinations, 18 threats of murder or harm, 11 assaults, 13 legal actions and 32 threats of legal action.

Punjab recorded 49 cases, just over half the total, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and Balochistan. Digital and independent journalists were targeted most often. Victims or their families identified government authorities and officials as alleged instigators in nearly two-thirds of the cases.

The report identifies the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) and its increasing use against journalists by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to punish dissent as “central to this legal siege” of online journalism in the country.

‘Recurring pattern’

A detailed analysis of representative Peca-related cases against journalists reveals a recurring pattern in which allegations of defamation, false information, harassment or reputational harm are channelled through cybercrime procedures, including in cases involving reporting on public expenditure, corruption or official conduct.

Even without a confirmed FIR or conviction, the process itself becomes “punitive” through summonses, device scrutiny, travel, legal costs, detention, repeated hearings, and reputational harm, the report says.

It adds that relief is commonly limited to bail or procedural protection rather than final vindication.

The report also provides guidelines for journalists and other media practitioners facing Peca-related cases to help minimise the harmful effects of legal action.

It expresses concern over the lack of institutional safeguards for media workers despite the establishment of two high-powered safety commissions, one at the federal level and the other in Sindh.

“The federal journalist protection mechanism is effectively dysfunctional, while the Sindh Commission, although more visible, has limited reach and demonstrated protection impact outside Karachi,” it says.

Lawmakers voice alarm over KP situation, seek electoral reforms

• Achakzai questions govt’s handling of Tehran diplomacy, Afghanistan ties
• Senate resolution seeks coordinated national action to curb population growth

ISLAMABAD: Lawmakers in the National Assembly and Senate on Thursday raised concerns over the political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and alleged human rights violations, while both houses also discussed electoral reforms and the need to strengthen parliamentary institutions.

National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai criticised the government for failing to take parliament into confidence over recent diplomatic developments in Tehran.

“How can four people decide the future of the whole nation?” he asked, warning that such decisions could push the country towards “anarchy and civil war”.

Mr Achakzai also opposed the suspension of trade with Afghanistan, describing Afghans as traditional friends of Pakistan and criticising the country’s past policies towards its neighbour.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said the parliamentary proceedings and the prevailing political situation in KP were creating a negative impression among the public. He also called for an end to hereditary politics in the country.

Rights concerns raised

Meanwhile, speaking on a point of order in the Senate, PTI parliamentary leader Barrister Syed Ali Zafar accused the government of undermining constitutional protections through the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in KP.

He argued that fundamental human rights could not be suspended or compromised, regardless of the political situation. “There is one thing that cannot be broken, suspended or compromised: the fundamental human rights of the people of Pakistan,” he said.

Mr Zafar expressed concern over the detention of Noreen Niazi, sister of jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, claiming that she had suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised but her family was not being allowed to meet her.

Responding to the concerns, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said Noreen Niazi had been provided medical treatment in Lahore and was in satisfactory condition.

On allegations that her family was being denied access, Mr Sanaullah assured the house that details would be sought and the matter addressed according to the circumstances.

He defended her detention, alleging that she had sought to create unrest by mobilising people for a protest march towards Islamabad.

Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas also criticised the government’s actions in KP, alleging that the province had been “snatched from the people”.

He also questioned the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in KP, arguing that democratic institutions could not function without respect for the law.

Population growth resolution

Separately, the Senate passed a resolution calling for urgent and coordinated national action to address the challenges posed by the country’s rapidly growing population.

The resolution, moved by PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman, called for a comprehensive national response to population growth and its impact on public services and socioeconomic development.

Ms Rehman said Pakistan’s population was projected to reach approximately 390 million by 2050 at the current growth rate, placing unprecedented pressure on national resources.
