Samsung mobile unit books loss, memory surges

29 October 2026 at 11:30

Samsung Electronics booked its previously flagged profit boost for Q3 as it continues to cash in on demand for memory products for AI, though cost pressures still hamper its mobile devices unit.

Its Mobile eXperience and Networks business, which includes its smartphones and mobile network products, posted an operating loss of KRW600 billion ($448.5 million) compared with a profit of KRW3.6 trillion in Q3 2025.

Revenue for the division was KRW37.7 trillion, up 11%.

It noted although its latest flagships and foldable range drove revenue, cost pressures hit the bottom line, a trend it also cited in Q2.

Samsung plans to focus efforts in the current period on sales of premium handsets and new related products, while aiming to “mitigate profitability risks through efficiency improvements across all business processes”.

In 2027 it intends to focus its device business on flagships and providing “differentiated experiences by customer segment”. It also plans to push “hardware and form-factor innovation”.

To “minimize declines in profit” it plans to undertake “agile market responses and operational efficiency initiatives”.

Samsung’s Networks business recorded a decline in earnings on lower sales in North America and high-margin software.

It is targeting revenue growth across North America, Japan and its home market of South Korea in the current quarter.

Memory boom
Across the whole company, Samsung booked net profit of KRW75.1 trillion, up from KRW12.2 trillion. Revenue was KRW195.3 trillion, an increase of 127%.

It noted the figures are a quarterly high, driven by demand for memory products.

Samsung was bullish on its prospects, expecting “industry-wide competition for AI leadership to drive continued AI infrastructure investment” in the current quarter.

In 2027, it anticipates “AI infrastructure capital expenditure to reach an historic level”.

Korea fines Apple, Google for app policies

28 October 2026 at 12:45

Apple and Google were hit with a combined KRW63.7 billion ($47.6 million) in fines for banned activities related to their respective app marketplaces and told to revise their business practices by South Korea’s communications regulator.

The Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC) issued a penalty of KRW42.9 billion to Google and KRW20.8 billion to Apple, and informed the companies they must revise external payment policies and resolve other issues.

It stated the companies “engaged in prohibited acts” under rules in its Telecommunications Business Act.

The regulator has been undertaking investigations into various elements of the pair’s app distribution procedures since 2022.

It looked into whether specific payment methods were being imposed, claims of unfair delay on app reviews and, in Apple’s case, “impairing users’ interests”, which is about commission charges.

The KMCC accused both companies of imposing “unreasonable conditions” on developers seeking to use third-party payment methods, which it asserted effectively forced the use of the brands’ in-app systems.

It also argued the companies “unfairly delayed app reviews” despite “predictable review timelines” being “critical” to developer’s businesses.

The KMCC stated app companies were not given “specific reasons when reviews were delayed” and the companies did not clearly respond to individual inquiries for explanations or requests for expected timelines.

It also accused Apple of imposing “discriminatory commissions” on app developers between 2015 and 2023.

The regulator ordered Google and Apple to amend their business procedures by removing restrictions on alternative payment options or app review procedures “and to prevent the recurrence of discrimination between domestic and overseas app developers”.

KMCC chair Kim Jong-cheol said he hopes the “sanctions will serve as a turning point toward substantive changes in market structure that app developers and end users can feel”.

BMW clocks production gains from automated driving

27 October 2026 at 16:40

Automotive giant BMW Group hit a milestone of having had a million vehicles use automated driving during production, citing process optimisation and logistics efficiency gains from use of the technology.

The company starting using Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW) technology in a pilot held at a facility in Dingolfing, Germany during 2022. It since expanded use to Leipzig and Regensburg, also in Germany, and the Mini Plant in Oxford, UK.

BMW’s factory at Spartanburg in the US is next in-line to have the technology introduced, with the launch expected in 2027. It eventually expects to use AFW across its global production network.

“AFW has progressed from an innovative technology trial to a well-established, scalable standard application,” the company noted.

BMW estimates around 3,500 automated vehicle movements take place every day across its sites.

The interior of a MINI featuring a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a circular digital display. The screen glows with blue graphics and Japanese text. Beyond the windscreen, a bright BMW digital factory is visible.

AFW shifts new vehicles around defined production and logistics areas using a combination of external sensors, cloud architecture and advanced motion planning software.

LiDAR sensors capture surroundings and aid vehicle navigation in real time.

The end result is new vehicles can “respond dynamically to people, other vehicles, driverless transport vehicles, logistics traffic and temporary obstacles”.

BMW board member responsible for production Raymond Wittmann said the company “recognised the potential of AFW early, tested it in a pilot phase and systematically developed it to series maturity”.

He added the adoption is an example of how BMW is “translating the vision” of its digital factory of the future “into industrial practice and driving the efficiency, digitalisation and intelligent connectivity” across its production processes.

Orange buoyed by Europe, MEA growth continues

27 October 2026 at 11:43

Orange CEO Christel Heydemann (pictured) pointed to developments across several operations in Europe and its enterprise offerings during an upbeat Q3 results discussion, a period in which its Middle East and Africa unit again provided a revenue boost.

The executive noted progress in its strategic plan including the launch of new deals in France, sustained growth in its cybersecurity unit and integration of the operator formerly known as MasOrange in Spain following a buyout completed in June.

She also noted it obtained an extended SecNumCloud security and digital sovereignty qualification for Orange Business’ cloud offerings.

Although taking place after the end of the quarter, she highlighted a letter of intent inked with peers Telefonica, Vodafone Group and Deutsche Telekom to explore a joint bid for spectrum in Europe for mobile satellite services.

Heydemann said the “initiative supports the ambition to strengthen the sovereignty, security and resilience of Europe’s strategic infrastructure”.

Another ongoing strategic move by the operator is a proposed purchase of assets from Altice-owned French rival SFR as part of a wider deal with Bouygues Telecom and Free–Iliad Group.

Orange noted the deal is still expected to close in H2 2027, though added “while rulings are expected in proceedings brought by the works council within the Altice France group, Orange remains committed to constructive social dialogue, which is ongoing”.

Numbers
The operator booked revenue of €12.2 billion in Q3, up 3.6% year-on-year. It noted all geographic regions contributed to the increase: MEA was up 14%, Spain 3.5%, France just above flat and the rest of Europe up 5.3%.

“Africa and Middle East continued its remarkable growth, while Europe, particularly Poland, delivered solid results,” Heydemann said.

The company does not report net profit figures in Q3, but noted its EBITDaL was up 4.6% to €4.1 billion.

Its annual financial guidance for EBITDaL was raised from an expectation of above 4% to more than 4.5%.

“This third quarter confirms the strong momentum generated by our Trust the Future plan,” the CEO added.

Verizon bags $2B AWS deal, hails efficiency drive

26 October 2026 at 13:12

Verizon unveiled an agreement worth more than $2 billion with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to supply dark fibre infrastructure to meet AI workload demand, alongside Q3 figures showing a spike in post-paid customers.

The operator noted the AWS agreement “establishes a commercial framework to scale distributed compute and meet the real-time demands of agentic and generative AI workloads”.

It builds on an existing strategic partnership between the two and mirrors a dark fibre deal with Google announced earlier this year.

On the operator’s earnings call today (26 October), CEO Dan Schulman said “these two contracts are a clear signal that the largest builders of AI infrastructure in the world are choosing Verizon as a strategic connectivity partner”.

He added the company also has an “active pipeline of additional hyperscalers, neocloud providers and large enterprise clients who are in negotiations to have us supply them with either dark or lit fibre connectivity”.

Results
Verizon reported net additions of 406,000 post-paid phone customers, up 820% year-on-year, and 137,000 post-paid net account additions.

It noted the latter is its best performance for this metric in more than a decade.

Net income of $5.3 billion was up 5.2%, attributed to a “sharp focus” on operational efficiency. Total operating revenue was $34.3 billion, up 1.5%.

In its Mobility and Broadband segment, it noted service revenue growth of 2.9% was offset by a 9% drop in equipment sales, due primarily to “significantly lower upgrade volumes” as customers keep devices longer.

It also noted the impact of a “strategic decision to reduce spending on device subsidies”.

Schulman hailed the period overall as “another record-breaking quarter” adding “one year into our transformation, Verizon is fundamentally stronger, operationally, financially and competitively”.

VMO2 lauds AI impact on RAN

26 October 2026 at 11:35

UK operator Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) flagged an around 20% improvement in spectral efficiency by using AI technology in the RAN during a test with Nokia at a busy transport hub, in what it described as first of its kind in the nation.

The test used AI to predict and optimise 5G radio resources during changing network conditions and levels of demand on a site serving customers around London Paddington rail station.

VMO2 noted use of the technology meant it could carry a greater amount of data using existing spectrum resources and deliver “significant throughput gains” during periods of high demand.

It asserted the results showcase how it can use AI to support growing traffic volumes, faster downloads and higher quality streaming, while reducing buffering in busy locations.

VMO2 CTO Jeanie York said as demand for data keeps growing “we need smarter ways to make the most of the spectrum and infrastructure we already have”.

“This live trial with Nokia showed how AI can improve network efficiency and help us respond more effectively to changing customer demand. By making better use of existing network resources, we can deliver a better experience for customers while supporting future traffic growth.”

The operator noted the project with Nokia is part of an ongoing network transformation plan.

Nokia president of mobile networks Emma Falck added the test “demonstrates how AI is moving from experimentation to delivering measurable benefits in live mobile networks”.

She added the collaboration “shows the significant potential of AI-native networks to enhance customer experiences while improving operational efficiency”.

The news is the latest in what is a hot mobile industry topic of use of AI in the RAN and comes a week after a spate of partner releases involving Nokia’s work in the segment alongside Nvidia.

Nokia, ICEYE to work with Ukraine on satellite project

23 October 2026 at 11:34

Satellite communications partners ICEYE and Nokia signed a pact with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence to develop sovereign capabilities, a move announced as the country reportedly continued to have issues with connectivity supplied by SpaceX.

Partners ICEYE and Nokia inked a letter of intent for the project with authorities in the country yesterday (22 October) during a diplomatic visit of Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo to Ukraine.

The move is positioned as aiding Ukraine’s defensive capabilities by building sovereign satellite communications capabilities.

It comes weeks after the two companies unveiled a deal to collaborate on low Earth orbit (LEO) systems aimed at governments and other entities.

ICEYE CEO Rafal Modrzewski noted the satellite sector specialist had “proudly supported Ukraine since 2022,” adding the country “needs secure, sovereign and high-performance satellite communications systems that it controls. We have a proven track record of delivering sovereign missions at speed to help build that capability”.

Starlink
The announcement with the Finnish companies on a sovereign system comes as contradictory reports emerged on restrictions being lifted on the military version of SpaceX’s Starlink in the country.

Earlier this month authorities in Ukraine complained it was experiencing limited functionality on Starshield, sparking wide media speculation about who was to blame.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported yesterday (22 October) US President Donald Trump called SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to request the system be restored to full functionality. Numerous outlets claimed this had subsequently been done.

However, earlier today the BBC cited sources in the country revealing problems were still being experienced.

EU awards fresh funds to ramp 6G drive

22 October 2026 at 16:23

A body charged with pushing 6G-related developments in the European Union selected a quintet of projects to share €22 million in its latest funding award, including undertakings on connected devices and improving data for AI-native networks.

The European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) explained the initiatives selected were intended to help address key needs for the next phase of 6G development.

Its aim with the newly-backed projects is to help researchers and businesses in the region advance promising technologies to large-scale tests and real-world adoption.

The partly EU-funded organisation noted now was a “crucial point for Europe’s 6G ambitions” given intensified global competition in next-generation communications.

Those chosen this time around are 6G-AID, Hemes-6G, EUnicon-6G, EU-India-6G-Bridge and SNS Impact.

6G-AID is focused on building a European data foundation for AI-native 6G networks; Hemes-6G will bring together eight testbeds across the EU on a shared platform for larger-scale work; EUnicon-6G seeks to identify opportunities for connected devices outside of smartphones; as the name suggests EU-India-6G-Bridge deepens collaboration with India; and SNS Impact is set to support cross-project collaboration.

Executive director of the SNS JU, Erzsebet Fitori, said for industry the projects would mean: “better access to the data, testbeds, technologies and partnerships needed to turn 6G research into products and services” while for citizens it helped “the foundations for more secure, reliable and capable connectivity in the years ahead”.

“These proposals are about making sure that Europe helps shape the technologies and standards that will define the future.”

The five selected come from the organisation’s sixth call for proposals which closed earlier this year.

Nokia chief continues to bang AI drum after Q3 gains

22 October 2026 at 11:18

Nokia CEO Justin Hotard (pictured) pointed to a boom in sales for its AI and cloud products during Q3, as he asserted the vendor is in a strong position to take advantage of growing demand for related infrastructure.

AI and cloud sales were up 123% year-on-year, with €1.5 billion of new orders placed in the quarter.

Hotard reported there is also an order backlog, positioning it for further growth in the area.

“Nokia’s strengths are uniquely suited to meet growing demands for AI infrastructure that is larger, more distributed and hyperconnected,” he added. “We are investing where we can differentiate and co-innovate with hyperscalers”.

Hotard highlighted progress on AI-RAN, which was the subject of an update yesterday (21 October) made at an event held by the Finnish vendor’s partner and investor Nvidia.

“AI-native networks are moving into the physical world and our AI-RAN platform is being developed to deliver the performance needed for this market,” Hotard said.

Gains
Nokia booked net profit of €156 million in Q3, up 95%.

Net sales were almost €5.2 billion, a 10% increase. The latter figure would have been a 9% rise with exchange rate fluctuations stripped out.

In its Mobile Infrastructure division, revenue was up 5% to €2.9 billion, partly attributed to shifting income from Q4 into Q3. The company noted this part of the business benefitted from “commercial discipline” and continued execution of cost reduction measures.

Hotard highlighted Nokia had continued to “simplify our portfolio” and was on track to complete the integration of optical networks company Infinera by the end of 2026, having acquired it in 2025.

The process is set to be completed a year ahead of its original plan, with the executive noting this created €200 million in net synergies.

KKR faces accusation of misleading EC over TIM deal

19 October 2026 at 15:15

The European Commission (EC) flagged concerns KKR may have provided incorrect or misleading information during its investigation into a deal for Telecom Italia’s (TIM) fixed network assets led by the company in 2024.

In a Statement of Objections document, the regulator cited concerns about responses submitted by the investment company on wholesale access agreements.

The EC explained following a probe into the issue sparked by complaints from operators it holds the preliminary view KKR “at least negligently, submitted incorrect and/or misleading information on the terms of its existing long-term agreements”.

Its accusation centres on a claim terms in existing contracts would continue to apply post-acquisition, since they could only be changed in agreement with third-party operators.

This policy being in place, it believed, would ensure “KKR will not be able to deteriorate the conditions for wholesale access or terminate such access”, the regulator added.

EC asserted information on this issue was key in its assessment of the proposed deal at the time.

However, following the buyout the regulator received complaints from third-party operators claiming the wholesale provider, FiberCop, had increased the price.

EC EVP for clean, just and competitive transition Teresa Ribera said: “Effective merger control depends on companies providing the commission with correct information.”

She continued: “KKR appears to have provided incorrect or misleading information about whether it would keep its existing long-term access agreements under the same terms unless mutually agreed otherwise with the third-party operators. Our evidence suggests that, after the merger, KKR may have raised prices for existing wholesale broadband customers, in some cases significantly.”

A KKR spokesperson told Mobile World Live it “strongly disagrees with the European Commission’s preliminary assessment. We stand by the accuracy of the information provided during the commission’s 2024 review”.

“We will vigorously challenge these preliminary allegations in our response to the Statement of Objections, while continuing to engage constructively with the commission. The Statement of Objections is not a final finding of infringement, and the commission’s existing clearance of the transaction remains valid.”

Telecom Italia makes changes at top table

19 October 2026 at 11:27

Telecom Italia appointed new enterprise and technology chiefs effective today (19 October), with both executives being replaced set to depart the company at the end of the year.

The operator’s new chief enterprise and innovative solutions officer is Mirko Mischiatti. He replaces Elio Schiavo, who held the role for more than four years.

Mischiatti joins from Poste Italiane, which has a controlling stake in the operator after a shareholder buyout offer executed earlier this year. He held various positions at the postal service provider, most recently as head of the digital, technology and operations.

Telecom Italia’s new CTO is Claudio Ongaro, who was previously chief strategy, business development and wholebuy officer at the operator.

He takes over from Leonardo de Carvalho Capdeville, who spent just over two years heading the operator’s technology office and spent a decade in the equivalent role at its operation in Brazil.

Ongaro’s former responsibilities have been handed to Telecom Italia’s CEO Pietro Labriola on an interim basis.

In a short statement on the moves, the operator noted the two departing employees were leaving voluntarily to “pursue new professional challenges”, adding the company “expresses its gratitude” for “their significant professional and managerial contributions”.

Port authority in India bags private 5G licence

16 October 2026 at 16:27

Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) became the first body of its kind in India to get the nod for a private 5G network, as it eyes smart operations, cargo tracking and general digital transformation benefits.

A statement from the country’s official press agency explained the port authority, in Goa, was issued with a Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) licence for the network last month with preparatory work already underway to help deliver the project.

It is apparently the first major port operator in India to secure the authorisation and the “first government autonomous body” to do so.

MPA has already issued a request for information to identify systems integrators and manufacturers for the project and appointed a consultancy firm to create a detailed plan.

Its move aligns with a focus from India’s Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to promote “digitisation, process optimisation and improving operational efficiency across the maritime sector”.

As with most projects of this type, the network is expected to deliver high-speed, low latency connectivity.

The authority anticipates this could “support operational requirements” while providing “greater control over network management and the handling of operational data”.

Potential use cases cited include automated logistics and cargo tracking, drone-based surveillance and management of port infrastructure.

“The adoption of these technologies is expected to support improved operational visibility, more efficient cargo movement and better coordination of port activities,” the statement added, noting as the project progresses it could provide reference points for ports elsewhere.
