Algeria's Kaylia Nemour wins double gold at gymnastics worlds

26 October 2026 at 17:49

Algerian gymnast Kaylia Nemour won gold on the balance beam on Sunday at the 2026 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, a day after claiming another gold medal on the uneven bars.

The two gold medals came after a difficult start for the 19-year-old, whose poor vault performance on Friday dashed her hopes of an all-around medal in Rotterdam.

"I'm extremely happy, but I'm completely in shock. In shock at this gold medal on beam," Nemour was quoted by International Gymnast as saying. "My goal was to do a nice routine, and that's what I did, so I was already proud of myself. And with the score, I was hoping it would be enough for a medal. And now, having the gold medal is unimaginable. I think I'll need a lot of time to digest it. Maybe a month, knowing me."

Nemour was first to compete in the uneven bars final, scoring 14.566 before seven other gymnasts took their turns. China's Zhang Qingyang finished second with the same score, with Nemour taking gold on the execution-score tiebreak.

"I knew there was the Chinese gymnast, last year's world champion, who is extremely strong, with a big start value and exceptional cleanliness," she said. "And then we had the same score, so I think it was the execution score that made the difference, and it's exceptional."

Nemour's success at the championships was celebrated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on social media on Sunday.

"Warmest congratulations, Kaylia... Like all Algerians, I am happy and proud of you for this double gold at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in the Netherlands," Tebboune wrote.

"You always deserve our full appreciation for making the nation’s flag proud. Long live Algeria."

Haris Rauf to join Adelaide Strikers for Big Bash League BBL 2026-27

26 October 2026 at 11:26

ADELAIDE – Pakistan’s fast bowler Haris Rauf could be heading for major Big Bash League (BBL) switch, with reports suggesting Adelaide Strikers are closing in on a deal to bring the star pacer on board for the 2026–27 season.

The reported development sparked excitement among cricket fans, particularly after Rauf’s impressive performances for Melbourne Stars, where he established himself as one of the competition’s most dangerous fast bowlers.

Adelaide Strikers had been pursuing Rauf and were reportedly nearing an agreement. Several cricket outlets subsequently echoed the speculation, describing negotiations as ongoing or a deal as likely. However, an official confirmation from Adelaide Strikers or Cricket Australia has yet to be confirmed, meaning the reported signing should still be treated with caution.

Rauf’s Pakistan international spent five seasons with Melbourne Stars, taking approximately 56 wickets in 33 matches and building a reputation for his raw pace, aggressive approach and ability to deliver at the death.

His performances reached another level during BBL|15 in the 2025–26 season, when he claimed 20 wickets in 11 matches to finish among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers and earn selection in the Team of the Tournament. His campaign also featured a hat-trick.

Adelaide Strikers reportedly been looking to strengthen their squad after missing out on the finals in each of the previous two seasons. With England’s Ben Stokes and New Zealand’s Mark Chapman already signed, Rauf has emerged in reports as a potential target for the franchise’s remaining overseas recruitment plans.

Under coach Tim Paine, the Strikers could benefit from Rauf’s experience in Australian conditions, his ability to generate extra pace and his proven record in high-pressure overs. A move to Adelaide would also give the Pakistan speedster an opportunity to bring his experience and wicket-taking ability to a new BBL setup after years with the Stars.

2026–27 Big Bash League season is scheduled to begin on December 12, 2026, with the final scheduled for January 26, 2027. With the tournament approaching, franchises are continuing to shape their squads, and any confirmed agreement involving Rauf would add another major talking point for Pakistani cricket fans.

Pakistan players attracted considerable attention during the previous BBL season, with names such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi featuring in discussions around the league. Rauf’s potential involvement would further raise interest in Pakistan’s representation this season.

Former Manchester United CEO says workers could learn something about feedback from pro athletes

26 October 2026 at 09:29
Peter Kenyon
Peter Kenyon has been working in sports for 30 years.

F1

  • Peter Kenyon, former CEO of Manchester United and Chelsea, said that feedback is constant and immediate in sports.
  • Kenyon, now a board advisor for Atlassian Williams' F1 team, said companies can learn from this approach.
  • He also said that feedback isn't always top-down in sports, which is important.

Athletes don’t have the luxury of waiting for an annual review to hear how they performed — and that may be a good thing.

The suspense that comes with anticipating a laundry list of critiques can sometimes be worse than the feedback itself. Plus, the older the feedback, the less relevant it may be.

Peter Kenyon, the former CEO of Manchester United and Chelsea, told Business Insider that given the nature of sports schedules, when something goes wrong, it has to be fixed before the next event, which is often just days away.

"It's not 'let's work for three months to solve the problem,'" Kenyon said. "No, let's solve the problem now because we go again tomorrow."

Kenyon, who now serves as a board advisor for Atlassian Williams F1 team, has worked in the sports industry for nearly 30 years, leading major restructurings during that time. He said the industry has taught him the importance of maintaining a continuous and instantaneous feedback loop.

He said that as soon as drivers finish a session on track, they sit down with engineers to get feedback so they can better their chances of qualifying for a race later that day or the next day.

Kenyon, who oversees the Atlassian Williams F1 team’s commercial and marketing functions, said feedback in high-performing sports environments doesn’t only flow from the top down. Employees are also expected to tell one another when something isn’t working.

That expectation shapes the culture across the industry, he said. It also shows up in the way athletes expect new teammates to meet the same high bar they set themselves.

It's an industry standard off the field too, though. At Manchester United, Kenyon said the receptionist would call out players who failed to greet her when they walked in — a directness that made her valuable.

"The power of that is incredible," Kenyon said about the former employee.

Frequent and candid feedback doesn’t equate to a bullying culture, though, the sports executive said. Kenyon said managing people and delivering performance reviews is difficult, but the best coaches know when to push athletes — and when to build them up.

"It's continual change," Kenyon said. "It's continual strive-for-performance gains."

Corporate workers may not compete in live-streamed competitions, but they face their own high-pressure sprints in a rapidly changing workplace. Some employers are even adapting traditional performance review processes to prioritize continuous feedback and reward top performers.

Sahibzada Farhan replaces Saim Ayub in Pakistan ODI Squad after Shock Exit

26 October 2026 at 08:11

LAHORE – Pakistan Cricket makes major change to unbeaten ODI tri-series squad, with struggling opener Saim Ayub stepping away from action amid string of disappointing performances.

PCB confirmed Sahibzada Farhan as his replacement, raising fresh questions over the national team’s opening combination just days before the tournament final. The unexpected development comes less than 24 hours after Pakistan pulled off sensational one-wicket victory over England at Gaddafi Stadium, where another top-order failure nearly cost the hosts the match.

Despite Men in Green’s winning consecutive matches and securing a place in the final, the team management has moved to address growing concerns surrounding the opening batting positions.

Saim Ayub leaves Pakistan Squad

PCB clarified that Saim Ayub himself requested to be released from the national squad. The left-handed opener approached head coach Mike Hesson and expressed concerns about his recent batting performances, seeking an opportunity to return to domestic cricket to regain his form and confidence.

Amid consultations, the national selectors and coaching staff accepted his request, appreciating the youngster’s willingness to acknowledge his shortcomings and work on improving his game. The decision means Saim will miss the remaining matches of the ODI tri-series involving Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka.

Cricket board has neither announced a timeline for his return nor clarified whether he will be considered for Pakistan’s next international assignment.

Saim’s struggles came under renewed scrutiny during Sunday’s dramatic clash against England, where he managed just six runs before returning to the pavilion. His early dismissal contributed to a disastrous start for Pakistan, leaving the hosts facing the possibility of their first defeat in the competition.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Shadab Khan produced sensational rescue on Sunday, smashing an unbeaten 113 to turn the contest in Pakistan’s favour. With the match hanging in the balance, Shadab and Haris Rauf stitched together an extraordinary unbeaten last-wicket partnership to secure a thrilling one-wicket triumph.

The victory extended Pakistan’s winning streak, but the recurring failures at the top of the order remained a serious concern. Even before the England encounter, captain Shaheen Shah Afridi had acknowledged the inconsistent performances of Pakistan’s opening batters and indicated that the management had alternative options available.

As Saim heads back to domestic cricket, Sahibzada Farhan has been handed another opportunity to establish himself in Pakistan’s ODI setup. The right-handed opening batter was surprisingly absent from the original tri-series squad but has now received a call-up for the remaining matches.

Farhan’s selection comes after he was entrusted with significant leadership responsibilities in Pakistan’s shorter-format cricket. Earlier this month, he was named captain of Pakistan’s T20I team for the series against Sri Lanka. He also led the national side at the Asian Games.

Saim’s exit is not the only adjustment made to Pakistan’s squad. Just a day earlier, the selectors included promising 21-year-old batter Maaz Sadaqat, who had initially been excluded from the tri-series. The young cricketer was drafted into the squad as additional cover for players experiencing minor fitness problems.

His inclusion followed the release of left-arm wrist-spinner Sufiyan Moqim, who was instructed to resume domestic cricket. According to the PCB, the decision involving Sufiyan was influenced by the characteristics of the pitches at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Pakistan’s recent performances have produced contrasting pictures. On one hand, the hosts remain unbeaten after winning their opening three matches and have already secured qualification for the tri-series final. On the other, repeated top-order setbacks have exposed vulnerabilities that could prove costly in high-pressure encounters.

Pakistan will face Sri Lanka in the fifth match of the tournament at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, October 27. The final is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at the same venue.

I’ve competed in 21 Hyrox races around the world. These are my 3 favorite host cities.

26 October 2026 at 00:30
A Hyrox race in Beijing, China.
Over the past two years, Lau Wen Loong has competed in 21 Hyrox races in 11 cities.

  • After a friend told Lau Wen Loong about Hyrox, he signed up for a race and trained for six weeks.
  • It's now been two years since he got started, and he's already competed in 21 races in 11 cities.
  • These three host cities have been his favorites.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lau Wen Loong, 37, who, over the past two years, has competed in 21 Hyrox races in 11 cities around the world. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I hadn't exercised regularly in two years when a friend said to me, "I think you'll be interested in this." He was taking part in Hyrox, an endurance race that combines running with fitness stations. You can race individually, as doubles, or in a relay, and there are both amateur and professional racers. He asked if I wanted to race with him.

My friend ended up doing the race with his wife, so I decided to do it on my own. "Don't be crazy," he told me. But I signed up six weeks before the event and completed my first race in Singapore in August 2024. My final timing was just under 73 minutes. I was a cross-country runner in high school, but for the first time in my life, I understood why some people hate running.

After finishing one race, I started asking myself what I wanted to do next. I'd put so much time into training for that first race, and I didn't want to lose that momentum.

The competitions come with demands

It's been two years since I got started in Hyrox, and I've completed 21 races in 11 cities, including Chengdu, Bangkok, and Mumbai. I have seven more lined up for this year. I'm in between jobs at the moment and working on an AI startup with my brother.

Each race costs about $150, while flights and other expenses can add up to $1,500. In terms of race prep, I recently bought a yearlong membership at a gym in Seoul, where I'm currently based, for about $55 a month. I've become an ambassador for several Hyrox-related brands, and they help cover some of my costs.

Hyrox is a good mix of running and weights. I think I may be the fittest I've ever been. I never imagined I could be faster than my younger self.

So far, these have been my three favorite host cities:

1. Osaka, Japan: January 2026

Every Hyrox venue is different. Similar to F1 tracks, the setup is tweaked, and the runs between stations are never the same for each race. It was my first winter Hyrox, and I hit a personal best of 61:51.

The winter part was interesting, because the race was held between two halls in a small venue. You ran in one hall, crossed to the other side to do the workout, and crossed back to run again, getting a blast of fresh air in the process.

I spent seven days in Osaka, most of it around the race area, but I managed to do a bit of shopping in the Dotonbori district. I had dinner at a famous crab restaurant with my father, who sometimes comes to support me at my races, depending on his schedule and whether he likes the city.

2. Incheon, South Korea: May 2026

It was my friend's first Hyrox. He raced before me, and I got to see it. Not only that, but I also came in first in my age group and did a personal best

Like many Hyrox races, the Incheon edition was held in a major convention center. The layout provided for a very smooth race, unlike at other races, which can sometimes disrupt your rhythm

I'm based in Seoul, so I went there daily. It was one hour each way. On the first day of the race, when I hitched a ride back with a friend, I got to try out the hyugaeso, or rest stops along the highway. They are like mini shopping malls, and the one I went to had three floors and lots of small stalls.

In the course of my races, I have made a lot of friends, like my doubles partner Ian, and Yvonne, a Singaporean working mom who has done 55 races. A couple on the plane from Seoul to Singapore also noticed my Hyrox bag, and we started chatting and became friends.

A man training for Hyrox in Jakarta.
In Jakarta, Lau completed two doubles races.

3. Jakarta, Indonesia: June 2026

The race venue was in a beautiful part of Indonesia I'd never been to — I hope to return.

It was the very first Hyrox race in Indonesia, so it was new for everyone. It was held in a convention center in one of Jakarta's green spaces, which is very scenic.

It was my first time doing two doubles races, and I didn't even know the guy I was racing with until I met him on the day. We were introduced through a mutual friend, and we only trained together once.

The drive to finish and win

I was competing in separate races at the September 2026 Hyrox event in Beijing, where Joanna Wietrzyk soiled herself. I saw her from afar, but didn't see what happened firsthand.

I've tried to put myself in her shoes and wondered if I would continue. I don't think I would or could. I do hope that she'll bounce back from it.

I've seen a lot of people crying at Hyrox. Whether it be tears of joy or tears of frustration, it still surprises me. Hyrox is a bit like therapy, as you are processing through your body. I intend to continue racing for at least another year.

I think the biggest benefit is that it enables you to be more self-aware.
