Stop sit-ups after 45: A safer, more effective core workout awaits

30 October 2026 at 08:57
Standard sit-ups often become a liability after age 45. The repetitive spinal flexion puts unnecessary pressure on the vertebrae, often outweighing the benefits to the abdominal wall. A more sustainable approach focuses on stabilizing the core and controlling deep muscle layers rather than chasing high-repetition crunches. Sustainable Core Training: The Basics The goal here is not to exhaust the body in a single session, but to build a habit that fits into a real-life schedule. This routine relies on time-based intervals rather than a fixed number of repetitions, which helps prevent the common trap of sacrificing form for quantity. Work interval: 40 seconds per exercise. Recovery: 16 seconds between movements. Volume: 3 to 4 full cycles. The primary indicator for stopping is a breakdown in technique or irregular breathing. Pushing through poor form only increases the risk of injury and decreases the actual stimulus to the muscle.
