Internet users across Pakistan may face slow speeds until Saturday

ISLAMABAD – Internet users across Pakistan may experience slower connection speeds during peak hours until November 2, 2026 due to emergency maintenance work on the Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE-1) submarine cable, according to Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL).

The company said repair work has begun on the cable section between Italy and France, potentially affecting internet performance during busy periods. PTCL warned that users may experience a slight decline in service quality while the maintenance work continues.

The company has urged customers to remain patient and cooperate during the repair process.

The AAE-1 submarine cable is one of the key routes carrying Pakistan’s international internet traffic. Stretching approximately 25,000 kilometres, the cable system connects Southeast Asia with Europe through Egypt, with a landing point in Karachi.

Since the maintenance work is taking place on the European section of the cable, users may notice slower access to websites and online services hosted in European countries, particularly during evening peak hours.

However, the extent of the impact may vary depending on network traffic and the services being accessed.

This is not the first time that a fault or maintenance work involving the AAE-1 submarine cable has raised concerns among internet users in Pakistan.

Good news for electricity consumers using 200 units per month

ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari has announced plans to abolish the additional electricity charges formula for consumers whose monthly consumption exceeds 200 units.

Speaking during a Senate session, Awais Leghari said the government was going to abolish the additional charges formula for six months for electricity consumers whose usage exceeds 201 units.

He noted that the current arrangement had benefited wealthier consumers more than low-income households.

During the Senate discussion, Senator Abid Sher Ali highlighted the financial burden of electricity tariffs on millions of Pakistanis, including protected consumers.

He questioned why electricity bills could increase sharply when a household’s consumption exceeded the 200-unit threshold by even a single unit. He also asked whether ordinary consumers were being made to bear the cost of electricity theft and losses within distribution companies.

In response, Leghari said electricity tariff slabs were necessary but acknowledged the need to resolve the difficulties associated with the existing system.

The minister said the number of consumers using up to 200 units of electricity had reached approximately 20 million. He added that many consumers in this category also relied on solar energy.

The government is now working on a system that would determine electricity relief according to household poverty levels instead of relying solely on the number of units consumed.

The energy minister told the Senate that the circular debt in the power sector had declined to Rs1,670 billion. The government aims to eliminate the circular debt within the next four years, he said, adding that the debt servicing surcharge associated with circular debt would also be abolished.

According to Leghari, the Energy Ministry received Rs1,180 billion in budgetary support when the current government took office. That support has decreased to Rs700 billion in the current fiscal year.

He also said annual losses of power distribution companies (DISCOs) had been reduced, although the benefits of those improvements had not yet been passed on to electricity consumers.

New Zealand introduces four student visa changes 2026

WELLINGTON – Immigration New Zealand has introduced four key changes to its student visa rules, revising work rights, compliance requirements, visa processing procedures and timelines for students nearing the end of their courses.

Reports said the new rules took effect on October 27, 2026, and apply to international students covered by the relevant visa conditions.

The changes are expected to affect how international students manage their employment during studies, meet visa requirements and plan their next steps after completing their courses.

Revised Work Rights for Research Master’s Students

Under the updated rules, research-based master’s students will no longer have unlimited work rights while studying. Instead, they will follow the same conditions as other master’s students.

Eligible students will be permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during academic terms and full-time during scheduled holidays, subject to their visa conditions.

Stricter Assessment of Visa Compliance

Immigration New Zealand has also tightened English-language requirements when assessing whether students can comply with the conditions attached to their visas.

The revised approach introduces additional considerations into the assessment process for international student visa applicants and holders.

Expanded Powers to Pause Visa Processing

Under the new rules, Immigration New Zealand can suspend student visa processing in a wider range of circumstances. These include situations in which authorities investigate possible non-compliance by educational institutions.

The change expands the circumstances in which visa applications may be put on hold while compliance concerns are examined.

Extended Time to Decide on Next Steps

Another key change concerns students whose visas expire one month after their courses end. These students will now have two months to decide on their next steps.

However, the existing March 31 expiry date for visas covered by the relevant schedule will remain unchanged.

What the Changes Mean for International Students

The updated rules make it important for international students in New Zealand to understand their individual visa conditions, particularly regarding permitted working hours, English-language requirements and the timing of their next immigration steps.

Students should review the conditions attached to their visas and seek clarification from Immigration New Zealand where necessary to ensure they comply with the revised requirements.

US orders non-emergency staff to leave Saudi Arabia amid security risks

RIYADH – The United States has ordered non-emergency government employees and family members of US government personnel to leave Saudi Arabia amid security concerns following attacks by Houthi forces, according to an official statement issued by the US Embassy in Riyadh on October 27.

The US Department of State issued the departure order effective October 23, citing safety risks amid hostilities targeting Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure that have caused civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions.

In its security alert, the US Embassy warned that the situation could escalate rapidly beyond the areas directly affected by the hostilities.

The embassy also said US government employees stationed in Saudi Arabia now require special authorisation from the Chief of Mission to use any airport in the kingdom following recent missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks on airports.

The alert highlighted disruptions at several major Saudi airports, advising US citizens to remain vigilant and carefully assess travel arrangements.

King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh announced a partial reopening on October 23, allowing domestic flights and some international services operated by national carriers. The embassy noted that a limited number of flights normally based at Riyadh airport were operating from Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Qassim.

Meanwhile, King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam remained operational, although both were experiencing some delays and cancellations.

The embassy cautioned American travellers about the possibility of further attacks on airports, airspace closures, flight cancellations and other travel disruptions.

“Please take extreme caution if you choose to use airports in Saudi Arabia,” the advisory stated.

US citizens were also urged to verify their flight departure status directly with their airlines and the relevant airports before travelling.

The warning comes amid continuing regional hostilities involving Saudi Arabia and Houthi forces. The reported attacks on civilian aviation infrastructure have raised concerns about the security of air travel and the potential for further escalation.

The US Embassy advised citizens to remain alert to changing conditions and to take the necessary precautions when making travel decisions within the kingdom.

Bushra Ansari recalls Botox mishap that affected one side of her face

KARACHI – Veteran Pakistani actress Bushra Ansari has opened up about a distressing experience with Botox treatment, revealing that the procedure once affected one side of her face and altered the appearance of her lips.

Speaking in a recent vlog, the actress recalled undergoing Botox several years ago, saying she was not properly informed about the precautions she needed to follow after the treatment.

Bushra Ansari revealed she slept on the same side of her face where the procedure had been performed. Five to six days later, she noticed that one side of her face had begun to droop, while the shape of her lips had also changed.

The unexpected changes left her worried about her health, and she feared that she might have suffered facial paralysis.

Ansari said she approached the doctor with her concerns, but her complaints were dismissed as unnecessary worry. The experience caused her considerable distress, and she remained at home for several months rather than going outdoors.

Recalling the incident, the actress highlighted the importance of clear communication between doctors and patients, particularly when undergoing cosmetic procedures.

She stressed that medical professionals should listen carefully to patients who report unusual symptoms or complications following treatment instead of dismissing their concerns.

Ansari also emphasised the need for doctors to explain possible side effects and provide clear post-treatment instructions so that patients understand the precautions they should take during recovery.

Lahore woman injured after jumping from bike to escape online rider’s harassment

LAHORE – A woman suffered injuries after jumping off a moving motorcycle in Lahore’s Johar Town area to escape alleged harassment by a ride-hailing rider, police said.

The incident occurred on October 17 when the woman booked a motorcycle ride from F-2 in Johar Town to Watto Palace, according to police.

During the journey, the rider allegedly behaved inappropriately towards the passenger, prompting her to jump from the moving motorcycle. CCTV footage of the incident reportedly captured the woman leaping off the vehicle and falling onto the road.

She sustained injuries to her face, nose, throat and head, while the rider allegedly fled the scene following the incident.

Police said the woman’s brother subsequently approached the authorities and filed a complaint against the rider, following which a case was registered.

Further information about the suspect’s identity and the status of the investigation has not been made public.

The incident comes amid another reported case of violence against a woman in Lahore. On October 24, a report said Mozang police had arrested a man accused of assaulting a woman who was travelling on a scooter along Mozang Link Road.

The suspect obstructed the woman’s path, knocked her off her scooter, slapped her and pulled her hair, leaving her with facial and nose injuries.

The case was registered following a complaint by the woman’s father.

President, PM link South Asian peace to resolution of Kashmir dispute

ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

In their separate messages on the observance of Jammu and Kashmir Black Day, they stressed that lasting peace and stability in South Asia remained closely linked to a just and peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Both leaders paid tribute to the sacrifices of generations of Kashmiris and called for sustained international attention to their fundamental rights and legitimate demand for self-determination.

President Zardari urged the international community, particularly the United Nations and international human rights organisations, to take due cognisance of the human rights situation in IIOJK, support efforts to protect the fundamental rights of the Kashmiri people and contribute meaningfully towards a lasting resolution of the dispute.

He reiterated that Pakistan would continue to extend its moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people and raise their voice at every appropriate international forum.

“We will continue to raise their voice at every appropriate international forum and to advocate the realisation of their legitimate aspirations,” the president said.

Describing Black Day as more than an occasion for remembrance, President Zardari said it also provided an opportunity to renew the commitment to a peaceful and just settlement of the dispute.

He recalled that on October 27, 1947, Indian forces landed in Srinagar, marking the beginning of what he described as a prolonged and tragic chapter in Jammu and Kashmir’s history.

The president said the people of IIOJK had endured decades of conflict, restrictions, violence and denial of fundamental rights. He expressed concern over restrictions on fundamental freedoms, heightened militarisation, arrests and reports of human rights violations, calling for sustained international attention to the situation.

He further observed that conditions had deteriorated since August 5, 2019, when India took unilateral measures to alter the constitutional and legal status of Jammu and Kashmir.

Paying tribute to the countless sacrifices of Kashmiri men, women and children, President Zardari expressed solidarity with their pursuit of justice, peace, dignity and self-determination. He said their resilience and determination remained a testament to the enduring strength of their cause.

He expressed hope that the people of Jammu and Kashmir would eventually be able to determine their own future in accordance with their aspirations and that the dispute would move towards a just and peaceful resolution.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message, said Pakistan’s position on Jammu and Kashmir remained clear, consistent and principled. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people and advocating their legitimate rights at national and international forums.

“On this Jammu & Kashmir Black Day, the Government and people of Pakistan reaffirm their unwavering solidarity with the people of IIOJK,” the prime minister said, according to a press release issued by the PM Office Media Wing.

The prime minister said that 79 years after Indian forces landed in Srinagar, the people of Jammu and Kashmir continued to be denied their inalienable right to self-determination, as affirmed in relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.

He said successive generations of Kashmiris had endured immense hardship, suffering and repression, while their courage and determination to secure fundamental rights remained undiminished.

PM Shehbaz also expressed concern over efforts to suppress legitimate political expression and silence voices representing Kashmiri aspirations. He highlighted the prolonged incarceration of Kashmiri political leaders, activists and human rights defenders, stressing the need for due process, respect for basic liberties and greater international attention.

He said the unilateral measures taken since August 5, 2019, accompanied by sweeping restrictions on fundamental freedoms, had affected the political, legal and demographic character of the territory. Pakistan, he added, had consistently called for these developments to be addressed in accordance with international law and applicable UN Security Council resolutions.

The prime minister paid tribute to Kashmiris who had sacrificed their lives and endured suffering in pursuit of their rights, saying their aspirations could not be extinguished through coercion or repression.

He prayed for a future of lasting peace, dignity and security for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including the fulfilment of their right to self-determination.

Imagine waking up at dawn, running GPS turn-by-turn navigation, handling continuous client correspondence, taking real-time product photos, and streaming music in the background; all these can be done without battery anxiety. In a 12-hour mixed-use scenario, the Y32 finished with 20% battery remaining, leaving power for whatever comes next.

But true power is not just about a single day’s charge; it is about long-term reliability. The Y32 is built for the long run with its 6-Year Battery Health. Under vivo’s laboratory testing, the battery is engineered to retain at least 80% of its health after 1,500 complete charging cycles. Based on a full charge every 1.5 days, this is equivalent to approximately six years of reliable performance, ensuring the phone feels as dependable on day one as it does years later. The powerful battery can deliver stable performance even under extreme temperature conditions. Rigorous lab tests also show that Y32 can stand by for 4 hours at -20°C and can maintain storage function for 24 hours at -40°C, helping users brave through temperature challenges.

This long-term reliability is supported by a Smart Charging Engine that learns user habits to reduce unnecessary battery wear, and Overnight Charging Protection that intelligently completes charging before wake-up time. For those moments when a quick top-up is needed, 44W FlashCharge offers a fast and practical way to recharge during a short break, getting you back to your day without long delays.

A Design that Stands Out and Is Ready for Business

The Y32’s design ensures it remains a sophisticated and highly professional companion for any setting. The device moves beyond mere utility, presenting an expressive and sleek physical identity that serves as an elegant social business card for client meetings and formal occasions alike.

This premium look and feel is anchored by the Premium Metallic Camera Design, which provides a strong, modern visual signature for the rear of the phone. Rather than treating the camera as a purely functional element, vivo has elevated the module with a meticulously crafted metallic grain texture and precise detailing, transforming the camera area into a focal point of refined craftsmanship. This structural sophistication is further enhanced by Dynamic Light, which balances the entire camera design. It not only provides real-time, at-a-glance notifications for calls, messages, and key alerts, but also offers different colored light flashes with dynamic effects, bringing the phone to life and reflecting consumers’ style and mood.

Durability Built for the Unexpected Moments

The vivo Y32 is built to handle the realities of a busy workday. It features IP68 & IP69 Dust and Water Resistance, providing extra protection against demanding environments. Whether you are caught in a sudden downpour on your commute or working in a dusty outdoor environment, you can have confidence that your device is built to brave the elements.

This is reinforced with Anti-Drop Armor Design, which provides another layer of protection against the accidental bumps, knocks, and drops that can happen in real life. Backed by an SGS 5-Star Premium Performance Mark for Overall Unit Drop Resistance, the Y32 is designed to be resilient without the bulky look of a rugged phone. It is a device that looks expressive and fashionable while being better prepared for the small accidents of a demanding day.

The vivo Y32 will soon be officially available for purchase in Pakistan soon. The device will be offered in three colors: Twilight Red, Sunset Orange and Meteor White. Two arrested in Karachi for posing as army officers to defraud citizens

KARACHI – The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Karachi has arrested two suspects accused of posing as Pakistan Army officers to defraud citizens and extort money through false promises of getting official work done.

The NCCIA Karachi Zone conducted an operation in the Korangi Industrial Area and arrested the suspects, identified as Muzammil, son of Badruddin Qureshi, and Hamza, son of Muhammad Aslam.

Authorities said the suspects allegedly impersonated senior military and government officials and falsely claimed to have influence and connections within the armed forces and government departments.

The suspects allegedly used the name and reputation of the Pakistan Army to gain the trust of citizens and collect substantial amounts of money by promising assistance with transfers, appointments and other official matters.

Officials said the accused misled people by presenting themselves as authorised military officers and making false assurances that they could facilitate various government and departmental processes in exchange for money.

Both suspects were arrested in Karachi’s Korangi Industrial Area. An FIR, numbered 114/2026, has been registered against them under Section 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Sections 13, 14 and 16 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), as amended in 2025, according to the information provided by authorities.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye officials to meet Iranian leadership amid Houthi attack

TEHRAN – Top representatives from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye are scheduled to meet Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday, October 26, to discuss regional developments amid rising tensions following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.

According to Reuters, citing sources familiar with the matter, the meeting will bring together representatives of all three countries that signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, is expected to attend the talks. Saudi Arabia will be represented by Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, while Turkiye’s intelligence chief is also expected to participate.

The meeting will mark the first high-level engagement between Iran and all three defence pact members since attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis against Saudi Arabia intensified.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement in August. The pact establishes a collective defence commitment under which an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all three.

The agreement also calls on the signatories to take necessary measures to address threats to one another’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and internationally recognised borders.

Progress on formal approval of the agreement differs among the three countries. Pakistan approved the pact last week, while the ratification process in Turkiye’s parliament began last week and remains ongoing.

The planned Tehran meeting comes amid heightened regional tensions and is expected to provide a high-level channel for discussions between Iran and the three countries.

LPG prices in Pakistan today October 26 amid escalating regional tensions

LAHORE – Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices remain elevated in Pakistani as per kilogram rates hover between Rs600 and Rs650 in some cities amid strike by retailers and ongoing regional tensions.

In Quetta, the LPG price stands at Rs520 per kilogram. LPG is being sold for Rs570 per kilogram in Peshawar, Rs600 in Attock, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, and Rs550 in Karachi.

The arrival of two ships carrying LPG from Oman has raised hopes of a possible reduction in prices. However, rates in several parts of the country have yet to reflect any significant relief.

Meanwhile, Iran has clarified that its border with Pakistan remains open and that exports of Iranian goods, including LPG, are continuing without restrictions.

Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam addressed reports about a possible border closure in a statement on X, saying Iran’s borders with neighbouring countries remain open.

He also said closing the border with Pakistan would not make sense under the current circumstances and would run counter to the interests of both countries.

The clarification comes as Pakistan’s LPG market continues to face high prices, with consumers awaiting the impact of additional supplies on local rates.
