Judge recuses himself from bail plea of suspect in Azeri woman case

LAHORE: Additional District & Sessions Judge (AD&SJ) Rafaqat Ali Gondal on Tuesday recused himself from hearing the bail application of Ahmed Tanveer, a key suspect, in the rape case of an Azeri woman, and referred the matter to the Lahore High Court for further proceedings.

Earlier, Advocate Safdar Shaheen Pirzada, counsel for the suspect, filed an application seeking exemption for his client from personal appearance before the court.

The counsel stated that the suspect’s interim bail expired on Oct 27, but he could not appear before the court because he had been arrested in another case.

He said Ahmed was in jail for a 14-day identification parade in connection with the other case.

He asked the court to exempt the petitioner/suspect from appearing for one hearing.

However, AD&SJ Gondal expressed his inability to hear the matter.

The judge informed the counsel that he had prepared a reference of the matter and forwarded it to the high court for further action.

Without naming a case, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, last week, had alleged that in a recent rape case, it was revealed that the suspect’s wealthy family allegedly offered huge money to the victim in exchange for withdrawing her allegations, despite her statement already having been recorded under Section 164.

“It was further alleged that the judge who granted bail to the accused had also been bribed,” she added.

Defence-C police had registered the case on the complaint of the Azeri woman, who accused three men of subjecting her to gang rape. She also accused two women of abetment in the crime.

Now all five male and female suspects are in police custody.

Petrol Price in Pakistan drops to Rs376, Diesel nears Rs400 mark

ISLAMABAD – Pakistanis get another cut in fuel prices as the federal government slashed petrol rates while making high-speed diesel more expensive, bringing mixed news for motorists, transporters and businesses already struggling with energy costs.

Under the daily pricing arrangement, petrol has been reduced by Rs3.19 per litre to Rs376.06. The relief has not extended to high-speed diesel, which has become Rs2.25 per litre more expensive. Its new price stands at Rs398.07, up from Rs395.82.

Latest Petrol Diesel Prices in Pakistan

Petroleum Division confirmed the changes through an official notification, stating that the revised ex-depot rates were determined by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) under the government’s existing petroleum pricing mechanism.

The fresh announcement comes just a day after consumers faced an increase in both major petroleum products. On Monday, authorities raised petrol prices by Rs1.54 per litre and diesel rates by Rs2.16 per litre, adding to concerns over the frequent adjustments in fuel costs.

The latest revision comes against the backdrop of uncertainty in international energy markets, where geopolitical tensions and shifting crude oil prices continue to influence petroleum costs.

Global crude prices, meanwhile, eased on Tuesday as investors assessed the prospects of renewed peace efforts in the Middle East. However, the broader energy market remained under pressure amid continuing hostilities involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia, alongside concerns about possible fresh US-Israeli military action.

Brent crude slips to $114.81 per barrel while US WTI crude moved down to $100.98 per barrel. Despite these declines, international oil prices remained near multi-month highs, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding global energy supplies.

Pakistanis to face 16-Hour Gas Load Shedding this Winters amid supply crunch

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan could be heading into another difficult winter this year, with authorities considering gas supply plan that would leave domestic consumers without natural gas for up to 16 hours a day.

As demand for heating and cooking rises in winters, the government is working on winter gas management strategy aimed at addressing the growing mismatch between supply and demand. Under the proposed arrangement, households would receive natural gas for just eight hours in a 24-hour cycle, potentially forcing families to reorganise their daily routines around limited supply windows.

For millions already struggling with soaring utility bills and the rising cost of living, the prospect of spending most of the day without gas could bring fresh financial and domestic challenges. Ministry of Petroleum reportedly completed its groundwork for the winter gas supply plan and is preparing to brief Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The proposed schedule prioritises cooking hours, with gas expected to be available around breakfast, lunch and dinner. Outside these periods, households could face prolonged interruptions, leaving consumers with little flexibility to use gas whenever they need it.

However, the exact timings have not yet been announced.  The proposed restrictions would be managed separately by the country’s two major gas distribution companies, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). Both companies are expected to announce their own supply schedules for domestic consumers in their respective regions once the government finalises its winter management strategy.

SNGPL is presently supplying approximately 487 million cubic feet of natural gas daily to household consumers, while SSGC is delivering around 286 million cubic feet per day. Together, the two companies are supplying roughly 773 million cubic feet of gas daily to domestic consumers, but growing winter demand could put further pressure on the distribution network.

The gas restrictions come at a particularly difficult time for consumers, who are also facing concerns over rising liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices. For households that depend on LPG cylinders as an alternative to piped natural gas, any further increase in prices could make cooking and heating significantly more expensive.

The situation could become especially challenging during the coldest weeks of winter, when demand for gas traditionally increases sharply. Despite growing concerns, the government has not yet formally approved the proposed eight-hour supply schedule.

NCCIA Officer tries to Sound ‘Tough’, ends up becoming Internet Meme with ‘Cyber Petroleum’ comment

ISLAMABAD – A stern warning against anti-state content turned into unexpected trolling for Pakistan’s National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) officer after a video of him struggling with English went viral.

The officer, apparently attempting to deliver strong message about agency’s crackdown on anti-state propaganda, became centre of attention for his slip of the tongue and fumbling. In the viral clip, NCCIA official can be heard saying in a serious tone that anti-state material will not be tolerated.

Referring to department responsible for keeping an eye on online activities, the officer appeared to describe its cyber patrolling unit as “Cyber Petroleum.” He went on to explain that the agency established a dedicated unit that continuously monitors online activity, struggling through another English phrase: “What’s going on social of media.”

— Waseem Abbasi (@Wabbasi007) October 27, 2026

Although the officer apparently intended to highlight the agency’s surveillance capabilities and its determination to act against unlawful online content, his choice of words quickly overshadowed the warning itself. The expression “Cyber Petroleum,” apparently mistaken reference to “Cyber Patrolling,” caught the attention of journalists, social media users, who wasted little time turning it into a viral joke.

As the clip went viral, social media users started questioning not only the officer’s communication skills but also the process through which individuals are appointed to responsible positions in government institutions. One user questioned how such officials managed to secure important posts in the first place. “How do such people get appointed to these positions, and why are they not removed even after their videos surface?” the he asked.

Another social media user quipped, “Whatever this brother is saying is absolutely correct. Well done!” the user wrote. We have absolutely no desire to write anything against him and have the entire Petroleum department come after us, he said.

The controversy comes as NCCIA intensifies its scrutiny of social media accounts accused of spreading anti-state propaganda, misinformation and material targeting state institutions. The agency has been stepping up efforts to identify individuals allegedly involved in online campaigns against national institutions, while its actions against certain critics of the ruling alliance and state authorities have also attracted public attention.

NCCIA DG Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi previously stressed zero-tolerance approach towards fake news and anti-state propaganda. The agency officials also highlighted the role of specialised cyber patrolling units tasked with monitoring digital platforms and identifying potentially unlawful online activity.

Saudi Arabia faces fresh Missile Attack as Houthis claim Direct Hit on Defence Ministry

RIYADH – Saudi Arabia witnessed another wave of ballistic missile attacks, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels claiming to have struck Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence in Riyadh and targeted one of its key oil refineries, raising fears of a wider military confrontation and fresh turmoil in global energy markets.

Explosions reported from parts of Saudi capital today as air defence systems responded to incoming missiles. While Houthis declared that their operation had successfully struck a high-profile military target, Saudi authorities insisted that the missiles were intercepted before reaching their intended destinations.

Footage released by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense showcases air defense systems and military vehicles launching missiles in desert settings, accompanied by the message, “A steadfast fortress for a proud homeland.” https://t.co/VqqFThpNZG

— Al Arabiya English (@AlArabiya_Eng) October 27, 2026

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree announced that the group had carried out a ballistic missile operation against Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence in Riyadh. He claimed that the missile had successfully reached its target, describing the operation as a direct strike against the Saudi military establishment.

Brigadier General @Yah_Saree , the spokesman for Yemen’s armed forces, said that the country’s armed forces targeted the Saudi Ministry of Defense in Riyadh with a ballistic missile, which directly hit the target. https://t.co/i5Bayv2lkN

— IRNA News Agency ☫ (@IrnaEnglish) October 27, 2026

However, the Saudi government did not confirm any impact on the ministry or report damage to the defence headquarters. Saudi authorities and the Saudi-led military coalition announced that two ballistic missiles launched towards the capital had been detected, intercepted and destroyed.

Despite the interceptions, loud explosions were reported in Riyadh, sending fresh alarm through a city already facing heightened security concerns following repeated missile attacks.

The missile activity was not limited to Riyadh as Houthis claimed to have targeted Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura oil refinery, a major energy facility on the Gulf coast, with a ballistic missile. According to Yahya Saree, the operation caused a fire at the installation. Ras Tanura has a processing capacity of approximately 550,000 barrels of oil per day and plays a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s petroleum industry.

Saudi-led coalition separately reported intercepting ballistic missiles heading towards the Eastern Province, where Ras Tanura is located. Some accounts indicated that as many as three additional missiles had been directed towards the region.

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Chromebook Scheme 2026 gets started to distribute 500,000 devices among deserving students, with eligibility requirements, regional quotas and application procedures now coming to light.

The initiative aimed to promote digital education by providing students with portable computers and internet connectivity, enabling them to access online classes, digital libraries and educational resources from home. The scheme primarily targets students who have performed well in their Class 9 (SSC-I) examinations, with selection based on academic merit and predetermined provincial and regional quotas.

Who is Eligible for PM Chromebook Scheme 2026?

Students hoping to secure a free Chromebook must have obtained at least 50 percent marks in their latest Class 9 examinations. However, meeting the minimum marks requirement does not automatically guarantee a device, as selection will depend on merit within the student’s province or region, educational board and academic stream.

Inter Boards Coordination Commission (IBCC) will be responsible for verifying examination results to ensure transparency in the selection process. The scheme covers students studying in government schools, private educational institutions operating in partnership with provincial governments or provincial education foundations, and registered religious seminaries.

Chromebooks Quota

Region Chromebooks
Punjab 181,090
Sindh 85,925

Students can use the designated IBCC application portal to check their eligibility and submit the required information once their respective educational boards have announced the Class 9 examination results.

Application portal: pmychromebooks.ibcc.edu.pk

The reported application procedure involves visiting the portal, checking the student’s academic record, providing personal information and uploading the required documents.

Pm Chromebook Scheme 2026 Eligibility Documents For Free Laptop And Apply Online

Applicants will need a recent photograph, their Class 9 examination marksheet and copies of their B-Form or Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC), where applicable.

Students should ensure that their information matches their official educational records, as discrepancies could affect verification and selection.

Before any device is dispatched, the student’s educational institution will verify examination results, current enrollment and continued affiliation with the school. Once the verification process is completed, Chromebooks will be delivered through a courier service equipped with a tracking mechanism.

Complaint committees will also be established to address issues involving merit selection, verification and delivery delays. The system is intended to ensure that the devices reach verified beneficiaries while providing students with a mechanism to report problems during the distribution process.

Pakistan Army hits back hard as Afghan Taliban open fire at Angoor Adda Border

SOUTH WAZIRISTAN – Security forces unleashed powerful retaliatory response against Afghan Taliban border positions on Tuesday after alleged unprovoked firing triggered a fierce confrontation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier in the Angoor Adda sector.

The latest escalation saw heavy weapons and artillery brought into action as Pakistani troops responded to gunfire directed at their border posts, according to security sources. Pakistani security sources claimed that the intense counterfire forced Afghan Taliban fighters to abandon several positions across the border in Afghanistan’s Paktika province.

According to security sources, the confrontation began when Afghan Taliban personnel allegedly targeted Pakistani military posts in South Waziristan with sniper fire, automatic weapons and other heavy weaponry.

The firing prompted Pakistani troops to launch an immediate and forceful response against positions identified as the sources of the attack. Pakistani forces reportedly used artillery alongside small and heavy weapons to target Afghan Taliban border outposts, mortar installations and defensive positions across the frontier.

Security sources maintained that the retaliatory action placed Taliban positions under intense pressure, compelling several fighters to withdraw from their posts.

The confrontation reportedly intensified at approximately 2:30 pm after a projectile was allegedly fired from the Afghan side towards Pakistani positions. Heavy exchanges followed, with reports of artillery and gunfire emerging from the Angoor Adda crossing and surrounding border areas.

Residents in South Waziristan and Afghanistan’s Barmal district of Paktika province reported hearing sustained exchanges of heavy weapons. Afghan local media also acknowledged the outbreak of fighting, reporting that the confrontation had begun after midday and involved heavy weapons on both sides.

The fresh confrontation has also raised concerns for civilians living near the international border. Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media suggested that shells fired from the Afghan side struck populated areas on Pakistani territory, potentially damaging property and threatening nearby marketplaces.

The renewed confrontation comes amid growing tensions between Islamabad and Kabul over cross-border militancy and repeated armed incidents.

Pakistan continues to raise alarm about militant groups, especially Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), of using sanctuaries inside Afghanistan to plan and execute attacks on Pakistani soil. Islamabad repeatedly demanded that the Afghan Taliban administration take meaningful action against militant organisations operating from its territory. Kabul has rejected allegations that it harbours anti-Pakistan militants.

Angoor Adda sector has witnessed several confrontations in recent months, including another reported exchange of heavy fire around October 19 and 20.

Pakistani security sources insisted that troops remained firmly positioned along the frontier and were prepared to respond to any fresh attack. Although the exact military losses and battlefield outcomes remain unconfirmed, the latest reports underscore Pakistan’s determination to protect its border positions and respond to threats against its territorial security.

Kashmiris observe Black Day to mark 79 years since Indian troops entered Srinagar

Kashmiris across the world are observing Black Day on Tuesday to mark 79 years since Indian troops entered Srinagar on October 27, 1947, with protests and demonstrations planned on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC), in Pakistan and abroad.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference and other pro-independence organisations have called for a complete shutdown in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Demonstrations are also planned to draw international attention to the longstanding dispute and demand the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Kashmiris and Pakistan regard the arrival of Indian troops in Srinagar as the beginning of an illegal occupation that disregarded the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The anniversary is observed each year as Black Day.

Kashmiris living in different countries are also organising rallies to call for a peaceful settlement of the dispute in accordance with United Nations resolutions.

In Muzaffarabad, a march towards the LoC is planned along Srinagar Highway. Participants are also expected to hold a protest in Hattian Bala, in Jhelum Valley district.

Dar calls for international efforts

In his Black Day message, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said the Kashmir dispute remained unresolved despite the passage of nearly eight decades.

He called for effective international efforts to address the issue and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to raising the concerns of the Kashmiri people at international forums.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Kashmiri people and their demand for a resolution of the dispute.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also condemned India’s control over occupied Jammu and Kashmir in her message, describing October 27 as a dark chapter in history.

She said the Kashmir dispute was a matter of international concern and reaffirmed solidarity with the Kashmiri people, saying Pakistan would continue to support their struggle.

PERA Force official booked for Raping Woman on False Promise of Marriage

BAHAWALNAGAR – Another case of alleged sexual assault reported from Southern Punjab, where Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (PERA) Force officer has been booked for allegedly raping young woman after getting her trust through promises of marriage.

City B Division Police registered case under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on October 26, 2026, following a written complaint submitted by the victim. According to First Information Report (FIR), the accused, identified as Hussam Baloch, son of Muhammad Yousaf, allegedly developed a relationship with the complainant approximately one year ago. The two remained in contact over the telephone, during which the suspect repeatedly expressed his intention to marry her.

— Muhammad Umair (@MohUmair87) October 27, 2026

The complainant alleged that she believed the suspect’s promises and trusted him. The incident reportedly occurred around 2 months ago back when accused took the woman to accompany him to Model Town, Bahawalnagar, claiming that he wanted to introduce her to his family.

According to the FIR, the suspect took the woman on his bike to a house located around 2 kilometres south of City B Division Police Station. However, upon entering the premises, the woman discovered that the house was empty. When she questioned the suspect about his family members, he allegedly assured her that they would arrive shortly.

The situation reportedly took a terrifying turn when the suspect closed the room’s door, leaving the woman frightened. The complainant alleged that the accused attempted to calm her by saying they were planning to get married soon. She further alleged that when she tried to escape, the suspect threatened and physically assaulted her before forcing her onto a bed and raping her against her will.

After alleged sexual assault, the accused reportedly dropped her back at her residence. The complainant told police that she informed her family about the incident, identifying Muhammad Kashif Ali, son of Muhammad Latif, among the witnesses she had informed. Despite the alleged assault, she said she repeatedly approached the accused and demanded that he fulfil his promise of marriage.

The suspect refused to marry her, prompting her to seek police intervention. In her complaint, the woman maintained that the accused had exploited her trust through false promises of marriage and subjected her to sexual violence, threats and physical assault.

Police registered a case under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with sexual assault, and initiated investigation into the allegations.

The case sparked concerns because the accused has been described in initial reports as an official of the PERA Force, a provincial enforcement body.

Pakistani Lawmakers pass Resolution in Support of Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s lawmakers backed Kashmiri people with a single voice, as the National Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution declaring that South Asia cannot have lasting peace until the Kashmir dispute is settled fairly.

The resolution tied regional stability directly to the Kashmir question. A just and peaceful settlement, it said, must rest on UN Security Council resolutions and on what the Kashmiris themselves want, as reported by 24NewsHD.

It was tabled jointly by Minister for Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam and Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir.

NA paid tribute to generations of Kashmiris who, the resolution said, have shown extraordinary courage and resilience and have made enormous sacrifices over the years. It condemned what it described as continuing, systematic human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Lawmakers also reaffirmed Pakistan’s moral, political and diplomatic support for Kashmiris in what the resolution called their just and legitimate struggle. The Assembly firmly rejected India’s unilateral steps of 5 August 2019 and the measures that followed. It said these were meant to change the internationally recognized disputed status and the demographic character of the territory.

It called on India to end the human rights violations in the occupied territory, stop efforts to alter its demographic makeup, release jailed Kashmiri leaders, and allow international human rights organizations and independent observers unhindered access.

The resolution urged the international community, the United Nations in particular, to keep its commitments to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. It asked for concrete steps to implement Security Council resolutions and to hold India accountable for abuses in the occupied region. The House said the final status of Kashmir must be decided in line with those resolutions and the freely expressed will of its people.

The Assembly also urged the government to keep pressing the issue at the UN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other international forums, and to keep advocating for the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.

EU Releases €4.9 Billion for Ukraine as Focus Shifts to Sustaining Military Support

The European Union has approved the mobilisation of approximately €4.9 billion under the European Peace Facility (EPF), implementing a significant part of an earlier agreement intended to resolve disagreements over military assistance to Ukraine.

The eight decisions, adopted by the Council on 26th October, allocate €4.7 billion towards partial reimbursement of military equipment already supplied by member states and €230 million towards the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine.

Although the announcement represents an important step in restoring the operation of an established financing mechanism, most of the money does not correspond to fresh deliveries of military equipment.

That distinction is important as European governments attempt to reconcile continued support for Kyiv with growing pressure on national defence budgets and the need to replenish their own military inventories.

From political agreement to financial implementation

The decisions implement part of the €6.6 billion agreement reached by EU governments on 25th September, which ended a prolonged dispute over the allocation of European Peace Facility resources.

As EU Today reported following that agreement, the package separates reimbursements for previous deliveries from financing for new equipment and military training.

Under the original arrangement, €4.7 billion was earmarked for reimbursements, €1 billion for new joint procurement and approximately €900 million for training-related expenditure.

Monday’s decisions authorise most of the reimbursement component alongside a further allocation for training. They do not, by themselves, demonstrate that the separately planned €1 billion in new military equipment has been purchased or delivered.

The distinction reflects the unusual structure of the European Peace Facility.

Established in March 2021, the EPF operates outside the EU’s regular budget and finances security and defence assistance, including military equipment supplied by member states to partner countries.

Governments can provide weapons from their national stocks and subsequently seek partial reimbursement. This enables the EU to share some of the costs, although actual deliveries remain dependent on national decisions, industrial capacity and available equipment.

Reimbursements therefore strengthen the financial position of contributing governments without necessarily increasing Ukraine’s immediate stock of weapons.

Nevertheless, by reducing the financial burden of earlier donations, the mechanism can help governments preserve the capacity to make further contributions.

Military training becomes a longer-term commitment

The additional €230 million for the EU Military Assistance Mission also reflects the increasingly institutional character of European military support.

Established in November 2022, EUMAM Ukraine provides training for Ukrainian personnel through facilities and instructors made available by participating countries.

According to an EU statement delivered at the OSCE in October, the mission had trained approximately 97,000 Ukrainian soldiers.

The EU has agreed to extend the mission for another two years, moving military training beyond a series of short-term emergency measures.

Training programmes can be adapted to battlefield requirements, including the operation of Western equipment, command procedures, engineering and specialised military functions.

However, the usefulness of training also depends on the availability of appropriate weapons, ammunition and replacement equipment once personnel return to Ukraine.

The Council says the latest decisions bring overall support under the European Peace Facility to approximately €10.8 billion, comprising €9.9 billion associated with military assistance reimbursements and €950 million for training.

Frozen Russian assets and the defence industry

A separate financing mechanism is increasingly relevant to European support for Ukraine.

The Council reports that €3.5 billion in extraordinary revenues generated by immobilised Russian sovereign assets has already been channelled through the EPF to finance ammunition, air defence and drones.

More than €1.5 billion of the resulting procurement has been directed towards Ukraine’s own defence industry.

This creates a different relationship between European financing and Ukrainian military production.

Rather than relying exclusively on weapons taken from European stockpiles, the arrangement allows part of the support to be translated into orders for equipment manufactured inside Ukraine.

The approach may also reduce certain transport and procurement constraints, although production remains vulnerable to Russian attacks, component shortages and interruptions to electricity supplies.

The legal and political questions surrounding Russian-asset revenues remain significant. As EU Today previously examined, disputes over how European institutions approve funding measures have generated legal challenges.

The next test for European governments

At their 15–16 October summit, EU leaders welcomed the EPF agreement and continuing disbursements under the separate €90 billion Ukraine support loan covering 2026 and 2027.

The two instruments serve different purposes. The loan supports wider Ukrainian financial and defence requirements, while the EPF provides a mechanism for sharing the costs of military assistance.

For Kyiv, the central question is how rapidly European financial commitments can be converted into deliverable military capabilities.

For EU governments, the challenge is whether reimbursement mechanisms, national procurement and Ukrainian industrial production can operate together on a predictable basis.

The release of €4.9 billion resolves an important financing issue. It does not eliminate the continuing requirement for new equipment, ammunition and sustained production.

Rate hike divides business community

KARACHI: Foreign investors welcomed the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) 50bps rate hike to 12 per cent on Monday, but the business community called it counterproductive for stabilisation, industrial growth and export competitiveness.

M. Abdul Aleem, Secretary General of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry, acknowledged the SBP’s move, saying it was needed to contain inflationary pressure and safeguard macroeconomic stability amid global energy price risks.

However, with large-scale manufacturing growth recovering to 1.9pc in July-August FY26 and private-sector credit expanding 14.1pc year-on-year, it is equally important to sustain the emerging momentum in investment and economic activity, he said.

As inflationary pressures are significantly influenced by external energy prices and domestic supply constraints, he emphasised that monetary tightening must be complemented by targeted supply-side reforms, fiscal discipline, competitive energy tariffs, broader tax-base coverage and predictable taxation and regulatory policies.

Foreign investors back SBP’s move to curb inflation, while industry says it will hurt exports and growth

In contrast, FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh said raising the policy rate to an uncompetitive 12pc would further inflate borrowing costs for manufacturers already grappling with unprecedented high overheads, soaring utility tariffs and liquidity constraints.

Instead of curbing inflation — driven largely by supply-side bottlenecks, energy costs and fiscal anomalies rather than excess demand — tight monetary policy has crippled domestic manufacturing, he said, urging the government and the State Bank to recalibrate the framework and bring the policy rate to single digits to make credit affordable for trade, SMEs and large-scale manufacturing.

High interest rates also place an unmanageable debt-servicing burden on the exchequer and private borrowers, creating a cycle of fiscal distress and stagnant output, he said, asking the SBP to align rates with regional benchmarks.

KCCI President Talat Mahmood warned that the hike would further raise the cost of doing business, discourage private-sector investment and undermine growth. He said Pakistan needs to strengthen its productive capacity, attract investment, generate employment and accelerate export-led growth but the policy rate hike will send the wrong signal to businesses planning to invest and expand.

SITE Association of Industry President Abdul Hadi said the move would further aggravate industry problems at a time when factories are operating far below capacity and barely surviving.

The business community has long demanded a single-digit policy rate, but industry’s real problems have again been ignored, he said, adding that high rates will not only make fresh funding harder but also increase the burden on existing loans.

He said the rate hike would burden manufacturers, forcing formal businesses to shut down or scale back, as costlier borrowing would hit new investment, expansion and production.

Korangi Association of Trade & Industry President Sheikh Umer Rehan said the hike could hurt industry, business growth, and recovery, adding that inflation could also be curbed by cutting energy costs, fixing taxation, improving the business climate, and implementing effective industrial policies.

Pakistan Textile Exporters Association Chairman Rehan Naseem Bharara said the rate hike would raise working-capital costs, constrain investment and weaken global competitiveness at a time when industry is already grappling with expensive energy and financing.

Arshad Khan’s café brand opens third UK outlet

LONDON – Arshad Khan, the Pakistani tea seller who rose to fame after his photograph went viral in 2016, has expanded his café business in Britain with a third outlet in New Malden, south London.

The new branch of Café Chaiwala Arshad Khan is being launched by British-Pakistani businessman Asif Khaliq, the brand’s UK master franchise holder. He opened the first outlet in Tooting in January 2025, followed by a second in Sutton.

Mr Khaliq said two more branches were planned within the next month as part of efforts to expand the business across Britain.

Speaking at the New Malden opening, he said demand for Pakistani tea and street food was growing among British Pakistanis, other South Asian communities and the wider public.

“We are doing our best to promote Pakistani culture through food and hospitality,” he said.

The café’s menu includes halwa puri, Lahori chanay, parathas, desi omelettes, samosa chaat and kebab rolls, alongside karak chai, doodh patti and Kashmiri chai.

Mr Khaliq said the response to the Tooting and Sutton outlets had encouraged further expansion. The aim, he added, was to introduce Pakistani flavours to customers from different communities.

Khan welcomed the brand’s progress under Mr Khaliq, crediting him with helping expand its presence in Britain.

From roadside stall to café business

Khan became an internet sensation in 2016 after photographer Javeria Ali photographed him serving tea at a roadside stall in Islamabad. The image drew international attention and led to modelling, advertising and business opportunities.

He established his café business in Pakistan in 2020 before pursuing overseas expansion through franchise arrangements. While his cafés in Pakistan have since closed, the overseas business has continued to grow.

Dispute with former franchise partners

The expansion follows a dispute involving an earlier UK franchise arrangement, which began with an outlet in Ilford, east London, in June 2023.

Khan and his business partner, Syed Kazim Hasan, became involved in a disagreement with former franchise partners Nadir Durrani and Yawar Akbar Durrani over contractual obligations, royalty payments, trademark registration and the commercial use of Khan’s name and image.

Khan and Hasan initiated proceedings at the UK Intellectual Property Office to challenge a figurative trademark registered by a former business partner.

In their legal case, they alleged that the registration used Khan’s likeness without continuing authorisation after the franchise relationship ended. According to their filing, the arrangement was terminated in April 2025, while the disputed trademark application was submitted in August that year.

The material provided did not include a response from the former franchise partners or an outcome of the proceedings.

Petrol hits Rs379.25, Diesel climbs to Rs395.82 in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – Pakistanis face another increase in fuel costs after the federal government raised petrol by Rs1.54 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs2.16 per litre for Tuesday.

Petrol Hits Rs379 25 Diesel Climbs To Rs395 82 In Pakistan

OGRA linked the adjustment to developments in international markets, including changes in Platts benchmark rates, premiums and incidental costs.

Diesel users have now faced two successive increases. On Friday, the government raised HSD by Rs1.91 per litre while leaving petrol unchanged. Together, the two revisions have added Rs4.07 per litre to diesel prices.

The domestic increase comes as global crude markets pulled back on Monday, with hopes of easing hostilities between the United States and Iran reducing some supply concerns. However, persistent attacks on Saudi Arabia kept investors cautious and oil prices near six-month highs.

Brent crude futures fell $2.03, or 1.7%, to $114.70 per barrel at 10:37am ET, equivalent to 1437 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate crude dropped $2.60, or 2.5%, to $100.71 per barrel.

Trump goes off script with ‘One Hell of Beautiful Ass’ Comment about Nicki Minaj

NEW YORK – US President Donald Trump took his Michigan campaign rally into viral moment as he made wild comment about Nicki Minaj’s A**, asked her to stand and then told the cheering crowd he hoped she was not offended.

“By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful A** before, Nicki Minaj. That’s hard to miss,” Trump said in Port Huron event. The rapper stood and waved as supporters cheered. Trump followed with: “I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time.” The exchange came as Trump campaigned for Republicans ahead of November’s midterm elections, with Minaj joining him after travelling to Michigan aboard Air Force One.

His remark followed detailed explanation of his earlier comments about Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted’s physique. Trump insisted those observations concerned Husted’s football background and had been made “in fun”, arguing that reports had missed the context.

“I’ve never done that with a man before. Off the record, women? Yes. Men? No,” he said, before switching his attention to Minaj.

Nicki Minaj used her appearance to rally support for Republican candidates. Slaying in gold Gucci suit, the 43-year-old rapper led chants of Trump’s name and described the election as a major turning point for the United States. As she left the stage, Trump offered more praise: “She never looked more beautiful. She gets it. She’s smart.”

Her trip also sparked talk of a possible White House role after communications director Steven Cheung shared a video of her discussing the administration’s economic and foreign policies aboard Air Force One. “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!” Cheung wrote on X.
