Cooling mattresses for hot sleepers: Why Nectar?

There's nothing worse than waking up at 3 a.m. sweating, and desperately searching for the cool side of the pillow. If that's you, the solution might just be a mattress from Nectar. All of Nectar's mattresses have cooling fibers woven into the surface fabric, designed to cool down your body temperature and keep you sleeping through the night, regardless of the season.

Nectar Classic Memory Foam Mattress: $699 (55% off)

Original price: $1,567

Cool to the touch all night long

Nectar memory foam mattresses are ideal for hot sleepers, with a cool-to-the-touch sleeping surface. The foam relieves pressure on your joints, conforms to your body and responds to your movement through the night, helping support your body while cooling you (and minimizing movement for a partner sleeping in the same bed).

You can choose from Classic, Premier and Luxe memory foam mattresses. As you move up the line, the cooling and pressure-relieving properties double and triple.

If you're an especially hot sleeper, consider the Ultra memory foam mattress, which has four times the cooling properties of the Classic model. It contains a separate sheet of phase change materials layered on top of the memory foam to help regulate temperature. Phase change materials in the Nectar Ultra can absorb or release heat as they change phase. That means it pulls heat away from your body when you're too warm and releases heat back out towards your body when you're too cold, so you always stay at the perfect temperature throughout the night.

There are more than 200 5-star reviews, many of which praise the cooling properties. "Absolutely the best mattress I have ever laid my head on," said one reviewer. "First night was the best night's sleep I have had in years. The comfort of the mattress helped me fall asleep quickly and the cooling effect helped me sleep all night."

All of Nectar's foam used is CertiPUR-US certified, which means it's free from ozone-depleting substances and harmful pollutants.

What about hybrid mattresses?

Hybrid mattresses combine the pressure-relieving support of memory foam with innerspring coils. These help with reducing motion transfer, which is perfect for those sleeping with partners. Nectar's Hybrid Luxe mattress would be ideal for extremely hot sleepers who toss and turn or have partners that move in their sleep.

The coils allow for more airflow in your mattress, rather than air getting trapped in the dense memory foam. There are Premier and Luxe versions of the hybrid mattress, which get more and more cooling as you move up the line.

NectarCool technology: The optional upgrade

For an additional cost, NectarCool is an optional cover upgrade on eligible Nectar Classic, Premier, and Luxe memory foam and hybrid models. It adds cooling polyethylene fibers to the cover for a cooler-to-the-touch feel, designed to bring down your temperature as you sleep.

How the NectarCool upgrade fits each tier

  • Classic: The standard cover has a cool-to-the-touch feel; NectarCool adds more cooling fibers.
  • Premier: The standard cover has about 60% more cooling fibers than Classic; NectarCool adds more to that cover.
  • Luxe: The standard cover has about twice as many cooling fibers as Classic; NectarCool adds more to the Luxe cover.
  • Ultra: The separate NectarCool cover upgrade isn’t offered since Ultra already includes top-tier cooling with four times more cooling fibers and phase-change material as the standard.

Try it first

Nectar has a generous trial period and warranty, so you can be absolutely sure you love your mattress.

You can sleep on the mattress for up to a year and return it for a refund if you don’t like it. Call or email Nectar, and the company will help you find a charity to donate it to.

If a mattress develops a problem within 10 years, Nectar will replace it. After 10 years, the company will repair it.

The formula includes jojoba oil, shea butter and Dead Sea minerals, along with caffeine, vitamin E and lactic acid. Other ingredients like hyaluronic acid, allantoin and niacinamide revitalize and hydrate skin. The brand also assures that the cream is designed to absorb into the skin without leaving a heavy, greasy residue.

What do reviewers think?

Reviewers report seeing improved changes in their skin after using Particle. One found that it helped his middle-aged skin "more than anything else [he] has tried."

"[It’s] slowly working, [and my] wrinkles on [my] forehead are less noticeable," said one reviewer, noting that their under-eyes appear less baggy and their skin tone looks smoother and more hydrated.

"I have seen a difference in my husband's skin and around his eyes. It definitely works to soften lines and crow's feet!" said another.

Some reviewers even said they've purchased the cream multiple times: "This is my third bottle of Particle! I have really seen nice results in removing dark age spots and fine lines on this 70ish sun-damaged skin," said a reviewer.

"Starting a care routine at age 60+ is not always easy, but Particle makes it easy," said another. "[I] have many folks say that I look 10+ years younger than I am."

This Layla pillow gave me the side-sleeping support I’d been missing — now $119

I'm a side sleeper, no matter how hard I try to sleep on my back. Side sleeping isn't necessarily bad, but it's made it a challenge to find a pillow that cradles my head and neck without leaving me stiff or achy in the morning — until now. After sleeping on the Layla BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow, I finally found what I would consider to be the ideal setup for side sleepers. It's soft, yet supportive, and I've noticed a meaningful difference in my nightly comfort.

Now through Nov. 26, FOX readers can get an extra 20% off the sale price of both BioCrystal pillows with code FOXDEAL. That brings the Side Sleeper Pillow down to $119 and the Classic Pillow to $111.

Layla BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow: $119 (37% off) with code FOXDEAL

Original price: $189

Side sleepers know how difficult it can be to find a comfortable position and stay there. Traditional pillows don't always provide enough support for your shoulder and neck, and can flatten throughout the night.

Layla's BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow strikes a comfortable balance between softness and support. Its adjustable loft lets you choose among 7, 6 or 5 inches, while the U-shaped cutout gives your shoulder more room to rest naturally. Since I prefer to sleep slightly elevated, I've kept mine at the full 7-inch loft and find it to be the perfect height.

My neck and shoulders melt into the U-shape (rather than being forced into an awkward position) and, better yet, continues to support me when I switch sides or roll onto my back throughout the night. The foam feels soft and responsive when I press into it, but it's firm enough to hold its shape under the weight of my head. I also appreciate that it doesn't feel overly dense.

What is BioCrystal technology?

According to Layla, BioCrystal technology infuses a blend of 16 natural crystals throughout the pillow's foam layers. The brand says the technology is designed to help regulate temperature and promote a more restorative sleep experience.

I can’t speak to the effects of the crystals themselves, but I do notice that the pillow feels comfortably cool when I first lie down. It also doesn’t seem to trap as much heat as some memory foam pillows I’ve tried. The overall feel is soft, plush and lightly cooling.

What you should know

The pillow measures 16 by 23.5 inches, weighs 5.7 pounds and has an adjustable 5- to 7-inch loft. It fits standard pillowcases, but the U-shaped design makes a fully enclosed case — such as one with a zipper or fold-over closure — the best option. Pillowcases with one open end may slide out of place.

I noticed a new-pillow smell, also known as off-gassing, during the first week or two. It has gradually faded, but shoppers who are sensitive to scents may want to air it out before using it.

The cover is removable and machine washable. Layla recommends washing it in warm water on a gentle cycle with like colors and tumble drying it on low. Do not use bleach. The four foam layers should only be spot-cleaned and allowed to air-dry completely. Keep the foam out of the washer and dryer, since excessive water and high heat can damage its structure.

My final thoughts

The Layla BioCrystal Side Sleeper Pillow is a strong option for side sleepers who want structured support, a higher profile and the ability to adjust the height. The shoulder cutout gives it an advantage over traditional rectangular pillows, especially if you tend to wake up with neck or shoulder discomfort.

Back and stomach sleepers may prefer the Layla BioCrystal Classic Pillow. My husband sleeps on it every night and appreciates its plush support, adjustable loft and roomy design, which keeps his head and neck comfortably supported when he’s lying on his back.

I went inside The Long Play, where CEOs mingled and attendees debated the future of work

Business Insider's Henry Chandonnet is pictured at The Long Play, the outlet's New York City event.
I spent my Thursday at The Long Play, where attendees made new connections and debated the future of work.

Henry Chandonnet/Business Insider

  • I schmoozed with CEOs, founders, and investors at Business Insider's The Long Play in New York.
  • Attendees heard from speakers ranging from Barry Diller to Ashley Graham — and spent a whole lot of time networking.
  • Some attendees tried pitching deals. Others debated the future of work.

The New York venue was bustling with executives, some of whom governed companies with thousands of employees.

I met my first one within seconds of walking in.

On Thursday, I attended Business Insider's The Long Play event at Perelman Performing Arts Center. (Full disclosure: Business Insider is my employer, and you're probably reading this on its website.) I entered the event with a mission: to chat, network, and maybe learn a thing or two about my own career.

Business Insider's The Long Play
Workplace debates and startup chatter filled the air at Business Insider's The Long Play.

Carl Timpone/BFA

Mingling among the crowd, I chatted with the founders of AI startups and communications chiefs. They debated remote work, asked about management styles, and discussed working together. "I've got to work on my elevator pitch," one CEO told me.

I sat down for lunch with some attendees to discuss a question: Is workplace loyalty dead? Most said no, or that it was more complicated. One brave soul, the content creator Colin Rocker, said yes.

"I still think it's dead," he told me after the lunch chat. "But, I will say, I got more context that it's not necessarily working across the org chart."

He added: "That hurts managers, too."

Fancy napkins!

Others at our table traded mentorship techniques and thoughts on leading an office. Nitzan Shapira said that, while working at Intel and Cisco, meetings were crucial. He has more flexibility while leading his AI startup, Harmony. "I'm kind of allergic to meetings," he said.

Munching on my plate of salmon, salad, and a caprese sandwich, I continued to chat with the crowd. Then came the dimming of the lights and the voice on the loudspeaker. The interviews were about to begin.

A who's who of the audience

Carl Timpone/BFA

You can tell a lot about the crowd from when people raise their hand — and when they don't.

I learned, for example, that much of the crowd had played "Grand Theft Auto." What better way to blow off some steam after a career-building conference than with some virtual vice? The attendees didn't consider themselves avid gamers, though; only a few hands shot up when Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick asked.

There were also a handful of investors in the crowd. Supermodel Ashley Graham asked for a show of hands, and I spotted three. During one of the breaks between talks, I talked shop with yet another venture capitalist.

As for GLP-1s, the crowd was less eager. Senior correspondent Melia Robinson asked while interviewing Ro CEO Zach Reitano, and she got only a few raised hands. (I bet, if we swapped the public hand-raising for a blind survey, that number would go up.)

The attendees around me were rapt. My seatmate, who worked for an AI startup, took notes with pen and paper. I saw some others jotting down learnings in the Notes app on their phones.

WeWork CEO John Santora described upping the once-freewheeling company's dress code. When he got there, Santora spotted pajamas and shorts; he now spots some salespeople in sport coats.

It prompted me to look around and check out what the audience was wearing. There were lots of blazers, button-ups, and slacks. A handful went more casual with their denim jackets and colorful blouses.

There were belly laughs, like when my talented colleague Sarah Needleman flubbed "how do you define success" with "how do you define sex" while interviewing Zelnick. He chuckled; the crowd joined in, and it bonded the audience.

And there were sobering moments, like when Noa Argamani described her drive to fund Israeli startups after spending 246 days in Hamas captivity.

The list goes on: There were chats with media mogul Barry Diller, banking entrepreneur Cristina Junqueira, and Nadia Carlsten, the CEO of the sneaker-company-turned-AI-infrastructure-provider Smartbird.

The event was really about meeting other people, though, and being inspired. I endlessly looped around the room, talking to C-suiters at startups and public relations agents. You could always hear the hum of new connections coming from the back of the room.

It ended with glasses of wine and hors d'oeuvres. After biting into a surprisingly delicious slider — Graham talked about pairing her wine with Korean barbecue and lasagna, and it made me hungry! — I had officially reached my schmoozing limit.

I ended the day with a full heart and a handful of new phone numbers. If you gave me yours, expect a text soon with plans to get coffee.
