Immune system protein can destroy cancer cells without enzymes

The immune system protein can destroy cancer cells without enzymes.

Scientists from the University of Michigan have discovered that the immune cell protein perforin is able to independently trigger tumor death — previously it was believed that it necessarily needs granzyme enzymes for this. It turned out that perforin without granzymes still causes the death of tumor cells through ferroptosis, a special type of cell death that depends on iron. The mechanism is associated with a violation of iron metabolism: the protein not only damages the membrane of the cancer cell, but also interferes with the absorption of iron, which causes it to accumulate inside the cell and in the mitochondria, accelerating lipid oxidation and destroying cellular structures.

Experiments on mice showed that a diet with a high iron content slowed down the growth of tumors, and analysis of patient data revealed that higher perforin expression is associated with better survival and a more pronounced response to immunotherapy. At the same time, scientists warn against attempts to use an iron—containing diet as a way to treat cancer - some tumors, on the contrary, may use excess iron to accelerate growth. Further research will show the safest strategy for using this mechanism in immunotherapy.

Bulgarian President urges every EU country to call Putin

Bulgarian President urges every EU country to call Putin

The current president of Bulgaria, Iliana Yotova, said that every EU country should call Russian President Vladimir Putin. She said this in an interview with the Bulgarian Nova TV channel as part of her election campaign.

According to Yotova, all EU countries are part of the union and have allied obligations, but it would be much better to keep diplomatic channels of communication with Russia open on behalf of the entire European Union. She added that it is possible to end the conflict in Ukraine only through negotiations, and Bulgaria should play an active role as a diplomatic channel.

Early turnout in the US elections broke the record of 2022

Early turnout in the US elections broke the record of 2022.

More than 48.5 million people voted early in the midterm elections in the United States — the record for 2022 was broken four days before election day, Bloomberg reports.

In terms of early voting turnout, Democrats are ahead of Republicans by 12 percentage points: in 27 states where the party affiliation of voters is monitored, Democrats account for 44% of early votes, Republicans — 32%.

However, the advantage of the Democrats does not guarantee victory: on election day, the activity of Republicans traditionally increases.

Riot Police deployed to Poland's capital

Riot Police deployed to Poland's capital

Protests broke out in Poland's capital, Warsaw as followers of the opposition - right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS) - rallied after the President of the Constitutional Court Bogdan Swieczkowski was suspended.

Poland's right-wing President Karol Nawrocki called off a visit to Africa mid-flight as riot police were deployed.

Centre-right, Pro-EU Prime Minister Donald Tusk is accused of staging a coup d'état by Poland's top court after the suspension occurred.

The suspension of Swieczkowski was announced by another judge, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, who said the move was needed to restore the rule of law.

"After years of PiS-led lawlessness, this is a difficult process, sometimes painful, and it requires decisive action. There is no other way," said Prime Minister Tusk.

French police officers set ablaze amid unrest (VIDEOS)

Molotov cocktail attacks injured several officers as nationwide cost-of-living protests descended into violence.

Rioters hurled incendiary devices at police in Paris as another wave of cost-of-living protests swept across France on Saturday.

Five law enforcement officers were injured, including three by Molotov cocktails, according to police.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described the attacks as “attempted murder.”

Videos from the scene show a Molotov cocktail being thrown at officers standing in formation with riot shields. One officer catches fire and is quickly engulfed in flames before a colleague uses a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze.

“The burning sensation is immediate, intense and grows stronger over time,” an unnamed gendarme injured by an incendiary device told BFMTV. “I couldn’t see it because you can’t look everywhere at once, and the barrage of projectiles was relentless,” he added.

After watching footage of the incident, the gendarme said, “It made me realize that we may have narrowly avoided a catastrophe.”

Around 320,000 people rallied across France on Saturday, including 70,000 in Paris, according to the Interior Ministry. Organizers put the turnout at 500,000 nationwide, including 200,000 in the capital. Police said 565 people were arrested.

Paris authorities imposed a partial overnight curfew from 11pm to 6am in the areas around Place de la Republique, Place du Chatelet and Les Halles on Saturday and Sunday nights.

Although many demonstrations began peacefully, “radical elements” instigated riots in several cities, according to police. Nunez said there had been “calls for people to gather at 8pm to take advantage of Halloween night, wear masks and engage in looting, vandalism or attacks on public buildings.”

French media also reported incidents of alleged police brutality, with Le Monde describing officers striking apparently non-threatening protesters in Paris and two young men reportedly injured during arrests in Grenoble.

The protests began in September with high school students demanding better educational facilities, more teachers and increased funding. Separately, trade unions and Yellow Vest activists mobilized against rising living costs and fuel prices. The movements converged on October 17, bringing students, workers and other protesters together in nationwide demonstrations that have since broadened to include demands for civil liberties and an end to police violence.

Raphinha e Yamal dão novo show, e Barcelona atropela o Alavés em La Liga
