20 October 2026 at 16:19
At the narrowest point of the Karmsundet, the channel that separates the island of Karmøy from the mainland on Norway’s west coast, five stones stand upright on a hillside. Some are more than five metres (16 ft) tall. They were raised inside a cairn, a mound of piled stones, laid out in the shape of […]

19 October 2026 at 17:00

Mad Honey: The Natural Poison That Knocked Out a Greek Army and Later Ambushed Roman Soldiers

20 October 2026 at 08:55
They had crossed most of Persia, climbed snowbound mountains and fought tribes that hurled stones at them from the cliffs. What left them most exposed, only a few days from the sea, was a honeycomb. There was no ambush and no enemy army, just a handful of beehives, some hungry soldiers and a flowering plant […]

19 October 2026 at 20:05
One of the venues for the FIDE World U7-U17 Championship 2026 in Roquetas de Mar, Spain.

For some Muslim countries, the boycott of Israel extends even to child athletes. This is particularly evident in chess, a sport rich in young prodigies. At the World Youth Chess Championships (U7–U17) in Roquetas de Mar, Spain, which covers age categories from under-7 to under-17, players from Syria, Lebanon and Algeria are required to forfeit if paired against an Israeli opponent. But not everyone complies. There have also been heartwarming displays of sportsmanship, especially in the under-7 category.

Malta’s Mysterious 31 Miles of “Railway Tracks” in Solid Rock May Be Roman, Not Prehistoric

19 October 2026 at 15:28
On a patch of bare rock in western Malta, roughly 80 by 100 metres (260 by 330 feet), dozens of parallel grooves cross, overlap and merge into one another. The spot, Misraħ Għar il-Kbir, is popularly known as Clapham Junction, after the busy railway junction in London. It is far from the only place like […]

Katie Zacharia ouster recalls turbulence of Trump’s first administration

19 October 2026 at 10:25

Donald Trump’s second presidency, it was said, would not be like the first. He was back after a period in the wilderness, but with lessons learned; this time he was surrounded by an army of loyalists and not, as in 2017, by a team of aides willing to disagree with him now and then. Nor would it once again be a nonstop spectacle of leaks, backstage betrayals and impulsive firings communicated through social media.

Clear Voices, Muddy Music: Scientists Measure How a Giant Roman Amphitheatre in Spain Sounds Today

18 October 2026 at 09:16
Thirty-five thousand spectators. That is the capacity the authors of a new study attribute to the Roman amphitheatre of Itálica, in Santiponce, near Seville in southern Spain. It is roughly the crowd of a mid-sized modern football stadium, and there was not a single loudspeaker in those stands. Whatever happened on the sand had to […]

Treinta y cinco mil espectadores.

Roman House Cut Into Rock Found with Its Own Ancient Pier From the Empire’s Last Centuries on Corsica

17 October 2026 at 17:10
Anyone who wants to build a house on the waterfront at Meria, at the northern tip of Corsica, has to let archaeologists look underneath first. The rule comes from the island’s regional archaeology service (the DRAC of Corsica). It has just paid off. Working on the plot, a team from Inrap, France’s national institute for […]

15 October 2026 at 10:25
About 13,800 years ago, Magdalenian hunters in northern Spain were still visiting the cave of Altamira, famous today for its painted bison. (The cave’s entrance would collapse around 13,000 years ago.) On the other side of the world, a different group of hunters was setting up camp on a ridge above the Tanana River, in […]

A Large Palace has been Discovered Atop a Hill in France, where a Senatorial Family Continued to Live “in the Roman Style” in the Early Middle Ages

13 October 2026 at 10:48
When people picture Gaul between the fifth and seventh centuries, they tend to think of invading tribes, shrinking towns and Merovingian kings so passive that later historians nicknamed them the “do-nothing kings”. A hilltop in Burgundy fits that picture badly. Archaeologists there are digging up a sizeable church, buildings heated from beneath the floor and […]
