Colombia Museum Restores 63 Pieces After Court Reverses Government Censorship

Colombia’s National Museum reinstated 63 artistic and historical pieces on Friday by court order after their October 15 removal as part of the government’s “cultural battle,” a move denounced as an attempt to censor historical memory.

Family Court 24 of Bogotá gave the Ministry of Cultures and the National Museum 48 hours to reverse the earlier action. The order specifies that no authority may remove pieces because of their content, ideological stance or political perspective.

The venue is again displaying cases, panels and audiovisual elements with materials showing key passages of Colombian politics, and its rooms show promotional posters for the presidential candidacies of Carlos Pizarro and Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, left-wing figures assassinated in 1990.

Among the returned pieces are several related to feminist struggles, LGTBI movements, victims of the armed conflict and the 2016 peace process, including the “Balígrafo,” the pen manufactured from a bullet casing used in the signing of the peace agreement with the FARC.

The earlier removal was part of the “cultural counterrevolution” announced by Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella, while Paola Holguín, minister of culture, said museums “must not serve as instruments of political indoctrination or spread biased versions of history.”

Among the removed pieces were a pride flag belonging to activist Elizabeth Castillo; a poster of Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa, the Patriotic Union candidate assassinated in 1990, which the Center for Memory, Peace and Reconciliation printed in 2010; and another of Carlos Pizarro, who was killed five weeks after Jaramillo, in April 1990.

La justicia le puso un alto a la censura y le dio la razón a la memoria!

El fallo de tutela que ordena devolver al Museo Nacional las piezas retiradas por decisión del Gobierno es una victoria de la libertad de expresión, la diversidad y la memoria histórica.

The official decision sparked strong reactions among activists, artists, politicians and Colombian public opinion. Colombian Law 397 of 1997, known as the General Culture Law, establishes in its first article and point four that, under no circumstances, “the State shall exercise censorship over the form and ideological and artistic content of cultural achievements and projects.”

A protest against censorship was also held outside the National Museum. The peaceful gathering was dispersed by police forces using water-cannon vehicles, stun detonations and tear gas.

“Brasil With an S” Rally Set to Protest Flavio Bolsonaro’s Coup Rhetoric

Students and social movements will rally on Avenida Paulista in São Paulo on Sunday, Nov. 1, to defend democracy and sovereignty against recent coup statements by Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.

The call is identified as “Brasil con S” (Brazil with an S), responding to a coup letter from the U.S. whose first version used an old coat of arms with the inscription “Estados Unidos do Brazil,” and named Flavio Bolsonaro the rightful president, despite his defeat in the runoff election. A later version changed the world “president” to “leader of Brazil”.

“We remain mobilized and organized to fight against any attempt at a coup in our country. There is no point in fleeing to the United States or ranting on the internet,” Camila Moraes, general secretary of the National Union of Students (UNE), said.

She mentioned Bolsonaro’s use of “a coat of arms we do not use” and highlighted the student movement’s role in attracting votes and ensuring Lula’s victory in the second round.

In a radio interview, Moraes stated that “Flávio Bolsonaro’s threats will come up against mass mobilizations.” She backed the progress of judicial investigations in accordance with the law and rejected the narrative of political persecution used by the far-right senator, who violated a judicial ban on leaving the country, to divert attention from the irregularities under investigation and to refuse to recognize President Lula da Silva’s victory.

Tech Platforms Face Scrutiny Over Brazilian Election Interference

Brazil’s magistrates investigate whether Meta algorithms and prediction market bets were weaponized to inflate right-wing electoral momentum.

After the presidential election in Brazil, in which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won with 51,79% of the valid votes, compared to 48,21% for candidate Flávio Bolsonaro, Brazilian authorities initiated formal legal probes into the campaigns.

RELATED: Milei and Allegations Regarding Aiding the Escape of Flávio Bolsonaro

Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and judicial figures ordered federal law enforcement agencies to investigate potential illegal foreign financing for Bolsonaro’s campaign, coordinated algorithm manipulation, and external digital interference targeting the Brazilian democratic process.

This investigation serves as an opportunity to observe how contemporary far-right political movements operate across national borders. Rather than functioning as isolated domestic phenomenon, reactionary political campaigns frequently rely on financial backing from foreign billionaire networks and digital infrastructure managed by major technology corporations.

Examining these connections provides clear insight into how external actors attempt to influence political outcomes within sovereign Latin American states, highlighting the structural vulnerabilities of modern democratic systems to foreign technological and financial intervention.

Vance-Thiel Ties, Right-Wing Funding

The Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the federal police to conduct a judicial inquiry to examine financial flows from United States-based political donor networks.

Among the focal points of the investigation are financial conduits and ideological organizations linked to prominent U.S. political figures and conservative donors, including networks associated with U.S. political figures such as Vice-president JD Vance and tech billionaire Peter Thiel, such as the Rockbridge Network.

Investigators are tasked with determining whether resources from these entities crossed international borders to support Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign, potentially violating Brazilian campaign finance laws that strictly prohibit foreign funding in national elections.

The mechanics of these financial transfers reflect a broader pattern of transnational cooperation among right-wing factions. Wealthy conservative donors such as Thiel, Vance, and Zuckerberg increasingly allocate capital to ideological allies across the globe to advance shared economic and political objectives.

By bypassing domestic transparency regulations, these international funding streams allow external actors to prop up political movements that align with their geopolitical and ideological interests.

Analyzing these financial channels clarifies the material foundations supporting far-right electoral strategies in Latin America and underscores the challenges sovereign nations face in maintaining electoral integrity against well-funded foreign interventions.

Polymarket, Meta, and Digital Manipulation

The judicial mandate issued by Supreme Court Justice Flávio Dino explicitly extends the federal investigation beyond financial transactions to encompass digital infrastructure operated by major technology corporations and prediction platforms.

The investigation targets the activities of Meta Platforms and the decentralized prediction market Polymarket, which receives major financial backing from Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, to evaluate their potential role in distorting the Brazilian digital information ecosystem during the presidential race.

Federal police are examining whether algorithmic recommendation engines on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook deliberately throttled content from progressive political organizations, including President Lula da Silva’s coalition, while systematically amplifying content favoring Flávio Bolsonaro.

In parallel, investigators are assessing the influence of prediction platforms like Polymarket, where financial betting mechanisms generate real-time probabilistic odds on political outcomes.

The probe aims to determine whether large-scale financial bets were deployed on these platforms to artificially inflate candidate odds and manufacture a false perception of electoral momentum.

Brazilian authorities are seeking to verify if coordinated international entities utilized artificial intelligence tools, paid online influencers, and targeted digital distribution networks to bypass electoral transparency rules, effectively weaponizing technical platform architectures to shape public opinion and undermine democratic confidence.

The Hypocrisy of the Bolsonaro Clan

After his election defeat, Flávio Bolsonaro departed Brazil alongside his family, traveling through the Argentine province of Misiones, before boarding a private flight from Guayaquil, Ecuador, to Miami, Florida.

The departure occurred amid the active federal investigations against him,  involving alleged financial improprieties and money laundering schemes.

Minutes after the presidential election results were finalized, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes issued an order canceling Senator Flávio Bolsonaro’s passport and directing him to surrender his travel documents to federal law enforcement authorities, a deadline the candidate failed to meet.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva characterized the flight as a shameful evasion of legal accountability, asserting that individuals who have committed no offenses do not seek to flee their home country.

Conversely, United States offered implicit support. President Donald Trump acknowledged that U.S. authorities had granted entry permissions to the Bolsonaro family, publicly describing the Brazilian electoral process as very strange while declining to criticize the Senator’s sudden departure.

The “Presidential” Stunt and U.S. Limits

Shortly after arriving in United States, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro issued a public open letter from Miami proclaiming himself the “true president-elect” of Brazil.

In his statement, Bolsonaro asserted that he had not fled his home country, claiming instead that he departed for Brazil’s benefit to lead the national opposition from abroad while alleging widespread electoral fraud and institutional overreach.

The declaration explicitly urged foreign governments and international organizations to withhold diplomatic recognition from the incoming administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The public stance drew swift pushback across the Brazilian political spectrum and among international observers. It characterized the statement as an attempt to undermine democratic institutions and subvert the constitutional order.

After intense Brazilian backlash and subtle diplomatic pressure, Bolsonaro subsequently deleted the initial letter, releasing a revised text that removed the claim to the presidency and referred to his role as a leader of the Brazilian political opposition.

While political figures such as Donald Trump confirmed that U.S. authorities had granted entry permissions to the Bolsonaro family, official statements from Washington maintained a calculated diplomatic distance regarding the proclamation.

U.S. officials declined to endorse Bolsonaro’s claim to the presidency, reiterating a stance of non-interference in the internal legal and electoral affairs of Brazil.

Defending Sovereignty Against Imperial Reaction

Flávio Bolsonaro’s presidential campaign highlights the complex intersections between domestic electoral processes and international political networks.

The integration of foreign financial capital, algorithmic content distribution, and decentralized prediction markets presents distinct challenges for national regulatory frameworks designed to protect electoral integrity.

Protecting democratic institutions requires comprehensive regulatory mechanisms capable of addressing cross-border political financing and ensuring algorithmic transparency among digital platform operators.

As Brazilian judicial authorities continue their investigations into campaign transactions and online information practices, the case emphasizes the necessity of maintaining rigorous legal oversight to safeguard national sovereignty against foreign technological and financial influence.

Russia Vetoes U.S. Plan Backing Morocco Over Western Sahara at UN

The UN Security Council failed to renew the mandate of its mission in Western Sahara (MINURSO) this Friday, after Russia vetoed a US proposal less than 24 hours before the mission’s mandate expires. Photo: EFE.

Russia exercised its veto at the UN Security Council on Friday to block a U.S. resolution that would have made autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty the only basis for negotiations over Western Sahara.

The draft text drew 11 votes in favor, one against and three abstentions. China, Pakistan and Somalia withheld their votes. Russia’s representative, Vasili Nebenzia, warned that imposing unilateral solutions without thorough prior consultations with the other party leads to a dead end.

The U.S. resolution would have extended the UN mission’s mandate until October 2027 and renamed it MINURSO. It also proposed removing the word “referendum” from the mission’s title, a reference that has stood since its deployment in 1991.

RELATED: US Reiterates Its Interest in Strategic Sectors in Morocco and Western Sahara

That referendum formed part of a settlement plan adopted in 1991 that would have allowed the Sahrawi people to decide the territory’s future. The vote was never held, blocked by repeated boycotts and maneuvers linked to the Moroccan crown.

U.S. “zero draft” consolidated the autonomy proposal as the axis of negotiations. It described autonomy as “the most viable solution” and established it as the “only basis” for continuing talks. Critics argued the language would have stripped the process of any real alternative to Moroccan rule.

Russia and China had both questioned the imbalance of the project and the possibility of predetermining the outcome of talks. Under the UN framework, those conversations must lead to a political solution that respects the self-determination of the Sahrawi people.

The session was also marked by a verbal clash between the representatives of Morocco and Algeria. The Moroccan diplomat accused Algiers of blocking the official registration of refugees in the Tindouf camps and of limiting their freedom of movement, while defending the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the path to resolving the conflict.

Morocco and its backers see the autonomy plan as a pragmatic exit. Algeria and the Polisario Front see it as an attempt to legitimize occupation.

Following the veto, the UN Security Council subsequently rejected a resolution drafted by Russia to extend the peacekeeping mission’s mandate for one year. There were 3 votes in favor and 1 against, with 11 abstentions, so it was not necessary for Washington to use its veto power, since the resolution did not reach the minimum of nine affirmative votes in the 15-member body.

MINURSO was created in 1991 to organize a referendum in which Sahrawis would choose between independence and integration with Morocco.

The Polisario Front, the political representative of the Sahrawi people, welcomed the outcome. The movement said the veto halted a deeply dangerous course of action pushed by United States, one that risked legitimizing Morocco’s occupation at the expense of the fundamental rights of the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination.

Polisario’s Warning

Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario representative to the UN, addressed the council after the session. He said the U.S. draft did not confront the fundamental and legitimate concerns raised by the front, nor the substantive observations submitted by several member states.

Omar described the resolution’s content and approach as a serious and dangerous deviation from the established principles of international law, including those that govern Western Sahara as a decolonization question.

In a letter to the council dated October 22, the Polisario Front’s UN representative called the U.S. draft “an extremely dangerous and unprecedented deviation“, not only international law -which underpins the question of Western Sahara as a process of decolonization- but also with respect to the peace process established by the Security Council.

Sidi Omar warned that its adoption would “trigger more tension and instability,” and that the Polisario Front “would have no choice but to disengage from the peace process as a whole.“

He stressed that the International Court of Justice confirmed that sovereignty over Western Sahara “belongs exclusively to the Sahrawi people, who have an inalienable, non-negotiable and imprescriptible right to self-determination and independence”.

The veto preserves the current mission name, Minurso, and keeps the self-determination question open on paper. For the Polisario and its supporters, the result blocks what they see as Washington’s attempt to bury the referendum demand entirely. For Morocco, the autonomy plan remains its preferred framework, one endorsed by a growing number of governments but rejected by the Sahrawi independence movement.

— Frente POLISARIO (@Polisario_) October 30, 2026

After the veto, hundreds of people marched through the refugee camps of TindoThe standoff caps decades of diplomatic wrangling over the former Spanish colony. The demonstrations signal the depth of feeling across the camps, where generations of Sahrawis have waited for a vote that has never come. The veto, for now, keeps that possibility alive.

The current UN mission’s mandate, extended by Resolution 2797 of October 2025, will expire Saturday, unless a last-minute initiative is taken to reactivate it. That leaves open the possibility that the Council may attempt to renew it during the next day.

If no agreement emerges, the mission will be left without a valid Security Council mandate to continue operations as of November 1, though it does not imply the immediate withdrawal of its personnel.
