TENET Introduces Torque-on-Demand AWD to Default Front-Wheel-Drive Crossovers

29 October 2026 at 11:08
Russian manufacturer TENET has updated its lineup of four crossovers-the T4L, T7, T8, and flagship T9-by introducing a new intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system branded as Torque-on-Demand. The core engineering shift is the move from a fixed transmission state to a dynamic one: the vehicle now operates as a front-wheel-drive (FWD) car by default, with electronics actively managing the distribution of torque to the rear axle only when traction limits are approached. At the heart of this configuration is a compact electro-mechanical coupling. Under standard driving conditions, such as dry asphalt, the system keeps power isolated to the front wheels to preserve fuel efficiency. However, the vehicle's control unit continuously monitors wheel speed and slip. When sensors detect front-wheel slippage, the system engages the coupling in fractions of a second, redirecting a portion of the engine's torque to the rear axle. This rapid intervention allows the vehicle to maintain stability during acceleration on wet surfaces or to initiate movement on icy inclines without requiring manual driver input. Driver Control and Terrain Management The integration of this hardware also expands the software-defined driving modes available to the operator. While FWD variants retain standard Eco, Standard, and Sport presets, the AWD versions of the T4L, T7, and T8 add three specific terrain profiles: Snow, optimized for loose and slippery winter roads; Mud, designed for soft, waterlogged unpaved sections; and 4x4, which forces the activation of the all-wheel-drive system regardless of slip detection. The flagship T9 model distinguishes itself with an exclusive Sand mode, a setting calibrated to manage torque delivery on loose, shifting substrates where excessive power can cause the wheels to dig in rather than gain traction.

Why 15,000 km Oil Changes Fail in Russian Traffic

29 October 2026 at 11:06
For many drivers, the 15,000-kilometer service interval outlined in manufacturer manuals appears sufficient. However, in the operating conditions typical for Russia, where vehicles frequently sit in traffic congestion or complete short urban trips, this standard often proves excessive. Andrei Babushkin, director of LYNXauto, explains that such schedules fail to account for the physical realities of intermittent driving. In these scenarios, the engine rarely reaches a stable operating temperature, triggering lubricant degradation processes that are independent of the distance traveled. The primary mechanical failure mode stems from the loss of fluid viscosity. Under conditions of extreme overuse or aggressive operation, oil undergoes profound chemical changes, transitioning from a liquid state to a thick, plastic suspension resembling the consistency of lithium grease. At this point, hydrodynamic lubrication in main bearing assemblies and other critical nodes disappears. Metal-to-metal contact becomes dry or semi-liquid, leading to immediate seizure and engine failure. A more common, albeit less dramatic, scenario involves accelerated abrasive wear. This process begins within the oil filter. The filter element, made of specialized paper or non-woven material, gradually clogs with soot, metal particles, and wear debris. When resistance to oil flow becomes critical, the bypass valve opens. Oil then circulates in a direct flow mode, bypassing the filtration media entirely. The accumulated contaminants are pumped directly into oil galleries and friction zones, acting as an abrasive that grinds components from the inside.

Electronic Interconnectivity Masks Faults in Used Chinese Crossovers

29 October 2026 at 10:54
The Russian secondary market is currently saturated with Chinese crossovers, many of which are only two to three years old. While low mileage and a fresh exterior suggest reliability, these vehicles often present a complex diagnostic challenge where aesthetic condition masks systemic volatility and steep depreciation-with some models losing nearly 45% of their value within three years. The Interconnectivity of Electronic Faults A primary challenge in assessing used Chinese vehicles is the tight integration of their electronic architecture. In these systems, a symptom-such as a malfunctioning climate control unit or a glitching infotainment screen-does not always point to a failure of that specific component. Because sensors and control modules are deeply interdependent, a trivial sensor failure or a software bug in one control unit can paralyze multiple unrelated systems. To distinguish between a localized hardware failure and a systemic software glitch, a visual inspection is insufficient. The discriminating check requires a deep scan using specialized diagnostic equipment to identify whether the fault is a physical component failure or a communication error across the vehicle's network. Without this, a buyer cannot determine if they are facing a simple sensor replacement or a fundamental electronic instability.

29 October 2026 at 09:05

Perfeita homenagem à Golden Age of Motorsport

Mercedes C350 2027 Adds Electric Turbo To M254 Engine

28 October 2026 at 11:53
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a distinction within the 2027 C-Class lineup that separates two vehicles sharing a similar exterior: the C300 and the C350. While the C300 remains mechanically identical to the 2026 model year variant, the C350 incorporates specific hardware and software modifications. These changes focus on the powertrain and control logic rather than body styling, creating a divergence in performance characteristics under the same badge. The core engineering update for the C350 involves an upgraded version of the M254 engine, designated as the M254 EVO. This modification is designed to eliminate turbo lag and provide a short-term power reserve through the integration of electric turbocharging. Both the standard M254 and the new EVO variant are 2.0-liter inline-four engines with a nominal output of 255 horsepower and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. However, the displacement of the EVO variant has been slightly reduced from 1,999 cc to 1,991 cc. The critical addition is a new electric compressor that maintains boost pressure at low engine speeds, before the conventional turbocharger spools up, resulting in immediate throttle response. An additional overboost function allows the system to briefly deliver 282 horsepower, an increase of 27 horsepower over the nominal rating. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) acceleration time of 5.8 seconds for the C350. This figure appears conservative, particularly given that the previous C300 4Matic achieved the same sprint in 5.3 seconds. This suggests the new C350 will likely be quicker in actual testing, although official figures remain the primary reference point.

Digital dash dilemma: BMW's X5 embraces tech, sacrificing touch

28 October 2026 at 11:42
The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive retains a familiar mechanical core within a radically updated chassis. Built on the same platform as the electric iX5, this petrol variant powers its frame with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six B58 engine, producing 394 horsepower and 580 Nm of torque. Recent testing in Orange County, California, suggests that despite the generational shift and the new "Neue Klasse” design language, the vehicle maintains its reputation as one of the most dynamically capable crossover SUVs in its class. The driving experience is defined by a tension between high torque availability and significant mass. The engine delivers peak torque from just 1,980 rpm, facilitating confident acceleration. However, the vehicle's weight, exceeding 2,260 kg, dampens the immediate sense of drive; drivers report needing to push the revs above 5,500 rpm to feel a genuine surge in power. The paired eight-speed ZF automatic transmission operates correctly in standard mode, though feedback indicates a slight lag when shifts are initiated via the paddle selectors. Underpinned by Adaptive Chassis Control Professional-a two-axis air suspension system with height adjustment and active anti-roll control-the X5 strikes a balance between comfort and stability. Because it is lighter than its electric counterpart, the petrol X5 handles road irregularities with greater softness and navigates undulating surfaces with more grace. On the winding canyon roads typical of the test region, the car demonstrated precise steering response and minimal body roll. The addition of rear-wheel steering contributes to a maneuverability that is surprising for a vehicle of this size.

Lada 1500: Why Soviet Engineers Rejected OHV for a Fiat-Derived OHC Engine

28 October 2026 at 11:30
In 1976, a Lada 1500 — the Western export name for the VAZ-2103 — arrived in Britain with a specification that puzzled automotive journalists. The vehicle featured an overhead-camshaft engine, a configuration that distinguished it sharply from its contemporaries in the Eastern Bloc. While the car's lineage traced back to Italian designs, its mechanical execution represented a deliberate Soviet engineering choice that would define its competitive position in Western markets for the next decade. The central engineering distinction lay in the valvetrain. The VAZ-2103 utilized an overhead-camshaft (OHC) engine, a layout that allowed for more efficient airflow and higher potential rotational speeds compared to the overhead-valve (OHV) or pushrod engines common in the region. This choice was not arbitrary; VAZ engineers had rejected the OHV designs prevalent in the Soviet automotive sector as early as 1966, opting for the OHC architecture to align with the performance characteristics of the Italian Fiat 124 and 125 from which the model derived its body and chassis. The result was a car that offered smoother power delivery and higher specific output per liter of displacement, attributes that Western reviewers quickly identified as a key advantage over competitors like the Polish Polski Fiat 125P. Transmission Experiments and Market Reality The most significant attempt to adapt the VAZ-2103 for Western preferences involved its transmission. In 1974, engineers in Tolyatti tested a General Motors automatic gearbox, sourced from an Italian Fiat 124 Special TS, intended for potential export models. Concurrently, the Soviet Union evaluated an experimental Czechoslovak UVMV automatic unit. By 1976, three cars equipped with these systems had undergone trials, with two more tested in 1978. Despite these efforts, the automatic transmission never entered mass production for the 2103. The mechanical complexity of integrating these foreign units with the existing Soviet drivetrain, combined with the lack of a dedicated supply chain for parts and service, rendered the project commercially unviable. In the West, the absence of a factory-fitted automatic remained a notable gap, though independent dealers like Britain's Satra occasionally retrofitted BorgWarner units, creating a small niche of modified vehicles that still circulate in Europe today.

‘It’s the gay Titanic!’ Inside La Bola Negra, the maximalist queer spectacular bound for Oscars glory

28 October 2026 at 05:00

Oozing panache and bagging awards already, La Bola Negra is an eye-popping war and prejudice epic starring Penélope Cruz in a blond wig and Glenn Close speaking Spanish. We meet the ex-lovers who dreamed it up

When Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo – the directing duo known in their native Spain as “Los Javis” – began writing their queer epic La Bola Negra, they weren’t thinking about whether it would be stylish (which it is) or win numerous awards (which it has) or capture what they refer to as “the anti-fascist zeitgeist” (which it does). Instead, they thought only of scale. “I’m done with LGBTQ+ movies being niche,” says Ambrossi. “I was like, ‘Let’s make the biggest, gayest war movie ever.’” Job done.

At Cannes this year, the best director prize was awarded jointly to them and to Paweł Pawlikowski, who made the Thomas Mann road trip film Fatherland. La Bola Negra is now an Oscars frontrunner, with best picture and best director nominations all but guaranteed. Brimming with panache, the movie darts back and forth between three stories set in Spain: in 1932, a young man applying for membership of an exclusive casino is rejected on the grounds of his suspected homosexuality; in 1937, a callow nationalist soldier develops tender feelings for the injured republican prisoner under his watch; and in 2017, a queer historian inherits an unfinished story by Federico García Lorca. That story lends the movie its title and provides the thread that sews its strands together.

Geely Preface Sedan: Volvo Platform Benefits vs. 130 mm Clearance Limit

27 October 2026 at 12:20
For drivers in Russia seeking a return to the driving dynamics of a sedan over the high seating position of a crossover, the Geely Preface presents a compelling, if niche, proposition. Andrei Kurayev, a former owner of a Belgee X50 (the Belarusian variant of the Geely Coolray), purchased the flagship sedan in autumn 2025 for 3.2 million rubles. His year of ownership offers a detailed look at whether the platform shared with Volvo justifies the price tag, particularly for those who prioritize handling and interior finish over off-road capability. The decision to swap a crossover for a sedan often stems from a desire for more predictable handling on the highway, a trait Kurayev notes was a key factor after his experience with European models like the Skoda Octavia. When weighing the Preface against competitors like the Changan Uni-V, the differentiator lies less in raw power and more in the perceived durability of components and the quality of the cabin assembly. The Preface is built on the CMA platform, developed jointly with Volvo. For a daily driver, this translates to controlled behavior in corners and a generally conservative, high-quality approach to the interior, characterized by fewer creaking plastics and improved ergonomic comfort compared to some rivals. The powertrain trade-off The vehicle is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 200 horsepower. A notable technical detail is that the same engine unit, when fitted to the heavier Geely Monjaro crossover, produces more power. For Preface buyers, this de-tuning is a benefit: the engine operates well below its mechanical limits, potentially extending its service life. In daily use, the transmission behavior shifts significantly between modes. In Eco and Comfort settings, the car exhibits a slight delay in throttle response, prioritizing fuel economy and smoothness. Switching to Sport mode eliminates this hesitation, providing immediate response that supports confident overtaking on highways.

Chery T2 Ultra Replaces T2 in LHD Markets Due to Assembly Line Constraints

27 October 2026 at 12:10
Chery has unveiled the Jetour T2 Ultra, a global variant of the refreshed crossover that replaces the existing T2 model in left-hand drive markets. The vehicle made its international debut at the Jetour Global Technology Experience Day 2026 in China, appearing less than two weeks after the launch of its domestic equivalent, the Traveller 7, which began sales on October 14. For regions including Malaysia, Thailand, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the T2 Ultra is not merely an update but a direct substitution for the current T2. This shift is driven by manufacturing constraints: producing both the old and new models on a single Complete Knock-Down (CKD) assembly line is inefficient due to significant differences in exterior styling and interior trim. A right-hand drive version is not expected to reach the market before 2028, leaving left-hand drive buyers with the immediate option. The most visible change in the T2 Ultra is the redesign of its exterior surfaces. The vehicle features new headlamps, a radiator grille with a central LED strip, and revised bumpers. Unlike the standard T2, where wheel arch cladding and bumpers are often finished in black plastic, the Ultra's versions are painted in the body color. This decision creates a more cohesive visual profile, aiming to elevate the perceived value of the vehicle without altering its fundamental structural geometry. The front bumper has been fundamentally reworked, while the rear retains its shape but with modified detailing. Interior Ergonomics and Digital Interface Inside the cabin, the engineering focus shifts to the layout of the central console. The traditional gear lever on the transmission tunnel has been removed and replaced with a selector located behind the steering wheel. This change frees up the center console space, altering the tactile interface for the driver. The instrument cluster is now a 10.25-inch digital display, while the central touchscreen has been enlarged to 15.6 inches with a 2.5K resolution. The infotainment system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8255 processor paired with 24 GB of RAM. This hardware configuration is intended to ensure smooth operation of multimedia and navigation systems, reducing latency during daily use.

Engine Noise Stays: Why the Crown Signia's Hybrid Power Still Has a Catch

27 October 2026 at 11:59
The 2027 Toyota Crown Signia enters the U. S. market with a starting price of $44,890, a figure that places it squarely in competition with compact Lexus crossovers. For buyers seeking a premium hybrid with all-wheel drive, this pricing strategy shifts the decision from brand prestige to a direct comparison of value, where the specific configuration of the vehicle becomes as critical as the badge on the grille. The entry-level cost has risen without corresponding technical upgrades, raising the barrier to entry for those considering the model as a long-term daily driver rather than a status symbol. The most significant change in the offering is the restructured Limited trim, now priced at $51,155. Toyota has folded previously optional equipment into the standard package, including a 360-degree camera system, lane change and traffic jam assist, front cross-traffic alert, a parking assistant with automatic braking, and approach illumination for the exterior mirrors. This move reduces the need for buyers to assemble a feature set through optional extras, effectively lowering the total out-the-door cost for those who prioritize these safety and convenience technologies. It is a pragmatic adjustment that acknowledges that the value of a car is often determined not by what it lacks, but by what it already includes in the standard specification. Cost of Entry and Standard Equipment Despite the enhanced standard equipment in higher trims, the base version of the Crown Signia has seen a price increase with no changes to its technical or design profile. This market strategy increases the minimum threshold for ownership, suggesting that Toyota is targeting buyers who are willing to pay for the Crown nameplate regardless of incremental improvements. The mechanical underpinnings remain unchanged: a hybrid system pairing a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with three electric motors, delivering a combined 240 horsepower. This powertrain is coupled to a continuously variable transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Performance figures stand at an acceleration time to 100 km/h of approximately seven seconds, with a claimed average fuel consumption of 6.2 liters. Buyers receive the same mechanical durability and dynamics as before, but at a higher initial cost, a trade-off that demands careful consideration against the tangible benefits of the standard features.

471,000-Mile Bolt EV: Diagnosing System Fault vs. Chemical Degradation

27 October 2026 at 08:20
A 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV with 471,616 miles on its odometer has arrived at the Out of Spec Renew workshop, presenting a case that challenges conventional assumptions about the fragility of electric vehicle (EV) battery chemistry. The vehicle entered the shop in a non-operational state: it refused to shift into drive and displayed a "battery fault" warning on the dashboard. To understand the failure, one must distinguish between the exhaustion of a battery's chemical lifespan and a discrete system fault. In this specific vehicle, the current failure does not represent the natural end of the battery's utility, but rather a disruption in the electrical chain. The evidence lies in the vehicle's history: a previous battery pack, installed in 2022 as part of a manufacturer recall, successfully powered the car for over 330,000 miles before the current issues emerged. The physical condition of the Bolt reflects a predictable trajectory of mechanical wear. The chassis and suspension show the scars of nearly half a million miles of road contact-scuffed rear bumpers, a replaced front bumper, and a history of repairs to the steering rack and hub bearings. These are failures of friction and impact. The battery, however, operates on a different timeline, governed by charge cycles and thermal management rather than physical abrasion.
