In an “Almost Perfect” World…

29 October 2026 at 21:55
(DR)

Well hello, good morning, and a wonderful Friday to you.

Another month has flown by, and November is right at our doorstep. Time seems to have moved even faster in 2026 than it did in 2025.

With the passage of time, the topic that brings us back to this article today arises once again from the need for our community to help, with whatever little they can, to fulfill a long-needed dream: the opening of the Magellan Home—or Magalhães, as you prefer. In November 2027, precisely one year from now, the official grand opening of this great project will take place. Quite frankly, I do not understand why there aren’t more donations and greater community will to see it through. This is not a time for envy or cynicism; it is a time to show solidarity and open our minds.

Do you know what being a “Philanthropist”—a fancy word for being generous—can do?

Let me explain… philanthropy promotes social well-being by directing resources, time, and support toward solving problems and improving the population’s quality of life.

Key Impacts on Well-Being

  • Access to Health and Education: Helps support hospitals, clinics, scholarships, and educational initiatives for vulnerable individuals.
  • Reduction of Inequalities: Supports social assistance networks that fight hunger, poverty, and social exclusion.
  • Innovation in Social Causes: Enables the testing of new approaches in areas such as mental health and technologies that the public sector cannot always fund immediately.
  • Community Strengthening: Creates a network of solidarity that unites donors and communities, while also fostering a sense of purpose and emotional well-being for those who give.

In an “almost perfect” world, and in a well-meaning community among 300,000 Portuguese descendants, if everyone gave just $20 each, it would total $6 million. In a perfect world, free of envy and malice.

I leave you with that thought.

It is what it is, and it will always be worth what it’s worth.

Thank you very much and see you soon,

The Casa do Futebol Clube do Porto of Toronto celebrated its 39th anniversary on Saturday, October 24, bringing together members, supporters, and friends for an event marked by blue-and-white pride and the unity of the Portista community.

Known locally as Casa do Porto, the association has served for nearly four decades as a gathering place for FC Porto fans, fostering fellowship, friendship, and strong ties to Portuguese roots through a shared passion for soccer.

Its history dates back to 1987, the year FC Porto lifted the European Champion Clubs’ Cup for the first time after defeating Bayern Munich. Inspired by that historic triumph, a group of supporters decided to establish an official representation of the club in Ontario. The association was officially recognized by FC Porto, becoming, according to its historical records, the club’s fifth official delegation worldwide.

During the celebration, President Paulo Carreiro highlighted the importance of reviving the tradition of celebrating the institution’s anniversary: “Casa do Porto went a long time without celebrating its anniversary, and when I was elected, I promised to bring it back. Today we have a full house of Portistas and beyond. Once again, we are bringing the Porto mystique back,” he stated.

Carreiro also noted that in 2027 the association will reach its 40th anniversary, with plans already underway to prepare a special surprise for supporters. He also reminded attendees that board elections are scheduled for Sunday, November 1, 2026, urging all members to take part.

Gilson Rodrigues, an FC Porto supporter attending the event, highlighted his lifelong devotion to the club, despite growing up in a household supporting a rival team: “I am thrilled to be part of this event. I’ve been a Portista since I was young, and I invite all Porto fans to join Casa do Porto,” he emphasized.

As it marks 39 years, Casa do Porto reaffirms its role within Toronto’s Portuguese community, keeping the blue-and-white spirit alive as it gears up to commemorate four decades of history in 2027.

Associação Cultural do Minho de Toronto celebrates 49 years of history

29 October 2026 at 18:40
(DR)

On Saturday, October 24, the Associação Cultural do Minho de Toronto (ACMT) celebrated its 49th anniversary in an evening marked by reunions, music, and pride in Minho roots. The event commemorated nearly five decades of dedication to Portuguese culture and paid tribute to all those who have helped keep the association vibrant.

Members, volunteers, family, and friends gathered to mark the occasion with a program that featured a celebratory dinner, live music by singer Sara Dantas, and a performance by the ACMT Folk Dance Group (Rancho da ACMT).

Amid conversations, traditional songs, and dances, the evening also offered a moment of intergenerational connection, united by a shared bond to their heritage.

For Carlos Gonçalves, president of ACMT, this anniversary represents an opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to the organization’s journey and to look toward the future with hope.

“As we celebrate ACMT’s 49th anniversary, we want to honor and thank all the members, volunteers, and leaders who have given so much of themselves to keep this association alive. Our dream is to continue growing, to own our own building, and to ensure that Minho culture and traditions are passed on to future generations. I appeal to the youth of our community to take pride in their roots and join Portuguese clubs and associations. Our culture lives through people, and it will only endure if we all do our part,” he highlighted.

Olivia Rites, President of the General Assembly, has been with the association since 2008 and views this path as a source of pride: “For me, it is an honor. Here, we are a family. It has been 49 years of hard work and perseverance, and we thank the volunteers and directors who have contributed to this house,” she stated.

Younger members find in ACMT a way to experience Portuguese culture and keep the connection to their roots alive.

For Cecília Fernandes, the association represents a sense of belonging: “ACMT is culture, it is family, and above all, it is an honor to be part of this club.”

Rui Guiomar shares this pride, emphasizing the importance of carrying traditions forward: “It is an honor to be part of ACMT and to be able to carry on our traditions.”

Emma Moniz also finds that dancing helps preserve her cultural identity: “It makes me happy to dance and to carry my culture forward.”

With its 50th anniversary on the horizon, ACMT is preparing to celebrate half a century of history in 2027. It is a journey built on dedication, friendship, and love for Minho roots, anchored in the hope that future generations will continue to bring this legacy to life in Toronto.

Uma geração sai à rua…

29 October 2026 at 15:25

Fiquem bem!

Bringing Portuguese people closer to Portugal

29 October 2026 at 15:14
JN

I return to the subject of TAP for the second consecutive week because I consider it of utmost importance.

The Portuguese diaspora is not merely—or rather, should not be—a demographic extension of Portugal in the world; it is one of our country’s greatest geopolitical, economic, and cultural assets. For the millions of people living outside the national territory, the connection to Portugal is measured by many factors, but in practice, it is sustained by reliable transport and communication links. It is against this backdrop that TAP Air Portugal transcends its commercial function and assumes a role of sovereignty and national cohesion.

The maintenance of direct and regular air routes between Portugal and the main host regions of our communities must be a national imperative. These routes do not serve only tourism or passengers visiting their families; they guarantee business continuity, diaspora investment in their homeland, return to the country, and the preservation of cultural identity for new generations. Without this link, regions with a dense population of Portuguese residents risk isolation from their home country, left dependent on the financial interests of foreign airlines.

To understand the flag carrier’s current situation and to safeguard this heritage of connectivity, looking back at the recent past is unavoidable. The previous Socialist (PS) Government’s decision to intervene and save TAP during a period of profound global crisis was an act of political courage and strategic vision. By injecting capital and restructuring the company, the State was not merely saving an airline; it was protecting the umbilical cord that binds Portugal to its communities scattered across the globe.

Today, the fruits of that strategic decision are clear. The value generated by that rescue process now allows TAP to partner with one of the most prestigious aviation groups in the world. This integration into the global market does not erase the company’s identity; rather, it strengthens it, conferring a competitive capacity that would be difficult to achieve in isolation.

Even more importantly: this process preserved the strategic position of the Portuguese State in the airline. By maintaining a decisive say in the structure, the State secured crucial bargaining power. It is precisely this influence that today allows—and must demand—that new partners uncompromisingly preserve the routes serving the diaspora.

A country’s sovereignty is also measured by its ability to ensure that its citizens, regardless of where they have chosen to live and work, continue to have an open and direct door back home. TAP is, and must continue to be, the wings of our Communities. Its future, now aligned with major international stages, cannot forget its origins nor its fundamental mission: bringing Portuguese people closer to Portugal.

Teixeira Family Museum: A legacy of memory of Madeiran emigration and the Luso-Venezuelan diaspora

29 October 2026 at 15:12
(DR)

The archipelago of Madeira—an insular territory that over the centuries established itself as a unique quay of arrivals and departures in the Atlantic Ocean—occupies an essential place in the history of Portuguese emigration. Marked by the departure of successive generations in search of better living conditions, Madeiran society built a significant migratory heritage both within and outside national borders, deeply tied to Portuguese identity and to the diaspora spread across the globe.

Among the main destinations for Madeiran emigration in the second half of the 20th century, Venezuela stood out unequivocally. This South American nation—which in recent decades has faced a profound structural crisis of an economic, political, and social nature—welcomed thousands of Portuguese citizens, many originating from Madeira, who found opportunities there to rebuild their lives, raise families, and develop business ventures. Today, the Portuguese community and their descendants represent a significant presence in Venezuelan society, with a particularly strong footprint in Caracas and within sectors such as commerce, hospitality, construction, and the restaurant industry.

The journey of this community, marked by hard work, entrepreneurship, adaptability, and the preservation of ties with Portugal, constitutes an important chapter in the contemporary history of Portuguese emigration. It is a legacy worth knowing, studying, and passing on to future generations, recognizing the contribution of Portuguese communities to their host societies and to Portugal’s presence beyond its borders.

It is within this context that the Teixeira Family Museum assumes special significance. Located in Fajã da Murta, in the parish of Faial, municipality of Santana, on the island of Madeira, the museum space was conceived by businessman Aneclet Teixeira de Freitas out of a deep connection to his roots and a desire to honor his parents, Albino Teixeira and Conceição Caires, natives of that Madeiran locality.

In the 1950s, like so many of their compatriots, Albino Teixeira and Conceição Caires left for Venezuela in search of better living conditions and new opportunities for their family. Their story mirrors the experience of countless Portuguese families who, faced with economic hardship and limited future prospects in their homeland, found emigration to be a path toward building a different life.

In the 1960s, at just seven years of age, Aneclet Teixeira joined his parents in Caracas. It was in the Venezuelan capital that he grew up and embarked on a personal and professional journey that would reach remarkable heights. In the early 1980s, he specialized in Orthodox Jewish gastronomy—a field where, combining knowledge, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a remarkable work ethic, he would go on to establish himself.

His professional trajectory, sustained by rigor, dedication, and a sense of opportunity, led to the creation of a significant business enterprise, which includes the well-known Rey David chain of stores in Caracas. His investments also expanded to other parts of Latin America and to Madeira, where he has invested particularly in the hotel and real estate sectors.

However, beyond business success, one of the most meaningful dimensions of Aneclet Teixeira’s journey lies in his connection to his family roots and homeland. Despite the distance, the vicissitudes of life, and the responsibilities inherent in managing major business ventures, he never ceased to honor his parents’ memory and the community from which his family originated.

This bond materialized in the creation of the Teixeira Family Museum, a family tribute project that took on a broader heritage and cultural dimension. By gathering memories, objects, correspondence, and photographs, the museum brings visibility to the experience of an emigrant family while simultaneously evoking the journeys of so many Madeirans who set off for Venezuela throughout the 20th century.

Open to the public with free admission, the venue features a set of elements that contribute to its uniqueness, including a garden with twenty palm trees brought from Egypt, a chapel, a bandstand, and a wine cellar. More than just a place of family remembrance, it serves as a meeting point between individual history and collective memory, where the experiences of one family intersect with the broader history of Madeiran emigration and the Luso-Venezuelan diaspora.

The Teixeira Family Museum plays a relevant role in valuing Madeira’s historical memory and recognizing the contribution of the Luso-Venezuelan community. By preserving the legacy of Albino Teixeira and Conceição Caires, Aneclet Teixeira honors not only his parents, but also all those who, departing from the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” crossed the ocean in search of new opportunities, carrying with them their language, customs, values, and the hope of building a better future.

This symbolic dimension takes on special relevance in an era when preserving the memory of Portuguese communities abroad represents both a cultural and intergenerational challenge. Learning the stories of those who left is also a way of recognizing the diaspora’s role in shaping the contemporary history of Madeira and Portugal, understanding that Madeiran and national identity extends far beyond geographical borders.

Pedro Nuno Santos, the alleged savior of TAP, and political selective memory Where, after all, does the truth lie?

29 October 2026 at 15:09
Wikipedia.

My dear readers, today it is very easy to look up information. In the past, documents were on paper and sometimes moved from one drawer to another. Now, with digitized information, sooner or later a great deal comes to light, much like oil rising to the surface of water.

I would not have a clear conscience if I did not share my opinion on an article I read—written by a great friend of mine—which praised Pedro Nuno Santos as the savior of TAP. I respect differing opinions, as that is one of the rich aspects of democracy. However, I decided to do some research because my memory was telling me that not everything in that analysis was quite right.

I do not intend to offend anyone, least of all my friend. I simply want to recall facts and pose a question: are we forgetting too quickly the responsibilities of those who governed us?

In Portuguese politics, a curious rule seems to exist: when decisions go wrong, the blame belongs to everyone or to the circumstances; when they go well, all the credit goes to a single individual. That is why Pedro Nuno Santos deserves to be analyzed without personal attacks, but also without political whitewashing.

TAP: saving the airline does not mean absolving those who governed it.

The story of TAP did not begin with Pedro Nuno Santos. In 2015, the government of Pedro Passos Coelho finalized the privatization of 61% of its capital, which was partially reversed in 2016 under António Costa. In 2020, during the pandemic, the Socialist government moved toward renationalization under the guardianship of Pedro Nuno Santos.

By the way, did the pandemic justify public intervention? That is a debatable question. But in December 2021, a restructuring plan was announced featuring approximately €3.2 billion in authorized public aid. These were millions of euros coming from taxpayers.

It is legitimate to defend TAP’s strategic importance to Portugal. What is equally legitimate is to ask whether that money was well spent and to demand accountability for the decisions made.

The Alexandra Reis case only reinforced these doubts. The General Inspection of Finance deemed null and void the exit agreement involving a €500,000 compensation package, with the exception of components relating to the employment contract and its respective severance. Pedro Nuno Santos ultimately resigned in December 2022 following the controversy.

TAP may have survived an extraordinary crisis. However, that does not automatically transform the political leader into a hero above critique. Where, then, does that leave us?

Housing: a crisis that was not born yesterday—my friends, do some research on this subject and you will see the truth.

The housing shortage stems from multiple factors, including insufficient construction over the years, a scarcity of supply, the concentration of demand in major cities, real estate investment, and licensing hurdles. Prices also outpaced the incomes of many families.

António Costa’s governments had years to expand public supply, facilitate construction, and establish conditions for a more functional rental market. In 2023, they introduced the Mais Habitação program, but the measures adopted failed to solve the structural problem of the housing shortage.

It would not be fair to attribute all the responsibility to Pedro Nuno Santos or to a single law. However, it is equally unacceptable to forget the years of Socialist governance when evaluating the results. Today’s opposition cannot erase yesterday’s responsibilities.

The NHS (SNS) and immigration: problems do not vanish by decree—and once again I ask you to research this, so you can understand how we arrived at the current chaos.

In the National Health Service, shortages of professionals, organizational difficulties, and long wait times are accumulated problems that demand concrete solutions. In 2023, approximately 1.7 million patients lacked a family doctor, according to data released at the time by the Public Finance Council.

On immigration, the dissolution of SEF (Aliens and Borders Service) was approved in 2021—who was in government and serving as minister then?—with votes in favor from the PS and Bloco de Esquerda. The transition to AIMA in 2023 exposed severe administrative and operational hurdles.

This does not mean that all immigration is uncontrolled. It means, rather, that the State must possess the capacity to manage processes, borders, and public services. Have we already forgotten who made these decisions as well?

My friends, politics cannot function like an altar. Pedro Nuno Santos may have merits, he may have defended legitimate strategic choices, and he may claim credit for achievements. What we cannot accept is for him to be presented as a savior without recalling the costs, the mistakes, and the decisions made under his responsibility.

The same principle applies to José Sócrates, António Costa, or any other leader. We should not condemn anyone simply for belonging to a party, but neither should we absolve governments out of ideological sympathy.

Portugal does not need political saints. It needs leaders who explain their decisions, own up to their mistakes, and answer for the results.

That is why I took some of my time to do research. Not to attack a friend, nor to impose my ideology, but to remind readers that political memory is fundamental. We may hold different opinions, but we must never confuse party loyalty with the truth.

Have a great weekend!

Carney, Ford unveil $9B plan to support industries hit by tariff war

29 October 2026 at 14:32
(DR)

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled an $8.7-billion joint plan on Parliament Hill Wednesday to help tariff-affected industries in the province battered by the trade war.

Ford called it “transformative” and said the top priority is to protect manufacturing in a range of industries. A new “joint steel action fund” that includes $3.5 billion in funding from Canada and $1.7 billion from Ontario, spread out over five years, will assist steel companies in expanding the types of products they make.

That comes with a pledge to ramp up protections against foreign steel dumping through stronger border enforcement and other measures. The overall plan also includes $2.5 billion for the automotive sector — with the federal government chipping in $1.5 billion.

Another $1 billion in federal funds spread out across three years will go toward the Ring of Fire mining development in northern Ontario to build out roads. U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war has dragged on for more than a year-and-a-half, slamming key Canadian sectors, including automotive and steel manufacturing.

Carney said he spoke with Trump Wednesday morning “for quite some time,” and that Canada remains ready to sit down and negotiate with the White House when the administration is ready.

29 October 2026 at 14:13

Conclusion : garder le contrôle sur chaque lancer

Feds investing $1 billion for road to Ring of Fire in Ontario

29 October 2026 at 14:10

The federal government will put down $1 billion to help build a controversial road to the Ring of Fire region in northern Ontario, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced. Photo: MARKJCARNEY/X.

The federal government will put down $1 billion to help build a controversial road to the Ring of Fire region in northern Ontario, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday.

The region is said to be rich in nickel, chromite, copper and gold and Carney said its development will secure Canada’s critical mineral supply chain.

“Canada is matching Ontario’s $1-billion investment to build road infrastructure to reach the Ring of Fire,” Carney said as he and Premier Doug Ford announced in Ottawa an $8.7-billion joint plan to help Ontario’s tariff-affected industries, including steel and automotive sectors.

The Ring of Fire sits partially in the James Bay lowlands, part of North America’s largest wetland, and is home to a number of remote, fly-in First Nations. Its mineral development has been a major focus for Ford since he took office in 2018.

“We can secure a sovereign supply chain and bolster Canada’s position as a critical minerals leader,” Carney said. “Now, to build those mines, we need roads.”

Earlier this year, Ford announced construction had begun on two of the roads that will eventually connect the provincial highway system to the mining area some 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Ont.

Ford had long called for the federal government to match the province’s $1-billion investment in the road project. Ontario’s previous Liberal government had also asked Ottawa to match that money.

“Last December, I joined the prime minister here in Ottawa to sign an agreement that would eliminate federal duplication for the roads to the Ring of Fire,” Ford said Wednesday.

“Thanks to that agreement, we got shovels in the ground on the roads to the Ring of Fire this summer and are well on our way to unlocking, as the prime minister mentioned, 70,000 jobs and $22 billion in economic activity that will be powered by the Ring of Fire’s critical minerals.”

The province has signed partnerships with three First Nations who want the road, while many others are decidedly against it.

Webequie First Nation and Marten Falls First Nation, both remote fly-in communities, want a road to connect to the provincial highway system as well as the economic opportunities in mining the Ring of Fire. They both say it will lift their communities out of poverty.

Aroland First Nation sits further south and its road will be upgraded to handle greater traffic.

Australian mining giant Wyloo and Juno Corp, a Canadian junior mining company, own the vast majority of stakes claimed in the Ring of Fire. Wyloo has proposed to build several mines up north if the road gets built, including a large underground nickel mine.

However, many other First Nations in northern Ontario are against the proposed road and mines. They say they haven’t been consulted and the development will change their way of life.

Neskantaga First Nation and Attawapiskat First Nation have built a settlement where the proposed road will cross the Attawapiskat River. The Canadian Press visited the region last year, including the settlement, where community members plan to block the road whenever construction crews arrive, years from now.

Sol Mamakwa, the provincial New Democrat who represents the riding of Kiiwetinoong, where the Ring of Fire sits, said he was dismayed by the latest news.

He said First Nations are livid at several pieces of provincial and federal legislation, some that have become law, which propose to speed up approvals of large projects, including mines.

“I’ve talked to enough people on the ground that live on these lands for a long time, they’ll be there to protect them and I stand with the rights holders,” Mamakwa said. “Without the proper, free, prior informed consent … I think that’s going to become an issue.”

Carney said speeding up mine approvals will be imperative, framing it as a way to counter U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods.

But the prime minister said Canada and Ontario are creating “a working group to engage with local Indigenous communities so together we’ll identify opportunities for economic development, conservation and Indigenous protected areas.”

Mamakwa said those words are meaningless.

“It’s just two white men in Ottawa deciding what’s going to happen with our lands,” he said.

“That project will not happen.”

Timor-Leste officially receives malaria-free certification

Timor-Leste officially received the certificate recognizing it as a malaria-free country from the World Health Organization (WHO). The handover took place on May 19, 2026, in Geneva, during the 79th World Health Assembly. The ceremony confirmed the announcement made by the WHO in July 2025, bringing an end to more than two decades of national efforts to eliminate one of the world’s most persistent and deadly tropical diseases.

The numbers demonstrate the scale of this achievement. The country recorded over 223,000 cases of malaria in 2006 and has registered no cases of local transmission since 2021. This result is all the more remarkable in a tropical, mountainous territory where the climate favors mosquito breeding year-round.

The journey began shortly after independence. The Ministry of Health established the National Malaria Program in 2003 and, a few years later, introduced rapid diagnostic tests, new effective treatments, and the free distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets to high-risk communities. Beginning in 2009, with support from the Global Fund, the fight against the mosquito was extended nationwide, and diagnostics became available at every local health post.

With this announcement, the WHO now counts 47 countries and one territory certified as malaria-free. Timor-Leste is only the third country in the South-East Asia region to achieve this, following the Maldives and Sri Lanka. It is also the second disease the country has eliminated in less than two years, after lymphatic filariasis in 2024. For one of the world’s youngest and poorest countries, where Portuguese is also spoken, this is a victory that proves public health can transform destinies.

Five countries in the Americas eliminate diseases that affected generations

On September 29, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) honored five countries and territories in the Americas for major disease elimination achievements over the past year. Between September 2025 and September 2026, all received certification, validation, or verification from the World Health Organization for eliminating at least one communicable disease.

The results are noteworthy. Brazil was validated in December 2025 for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV, becoming the most populous country in the world to reach this milestone. Chile became the first country in the Americas to eliminate leprosy as a public health problem and, in September, became the first in South America to eliminate dog-transmitted rabies. El Salvador eliminated trachoma, an eye infection that can cause blindness, becoming the first Central American country to do so. The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands also eliminated mother-to-child HIV transmission; Turks and Caicos accomplished the same for hepatitis B, a first for a territory in the region.

Nearly 60% of the countries and territories worldwide recognized for eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission are in the Americas. PAHO also highlights that eliminating diseases strengthens health systems as a whole by improving surveillance, laboratories, and primary care. The goal is ambitious: to eliminate more than 30 communicable diseases and related conditions in the region by 2030. Behind these figures are millions of children born healthy and communities freed from ancient diseases.

Germany breaks record: nearly 60% of electricity comes from renewable sources

The energy transition in Europe’s largest economy has taken another historic step forward. Renewable energy covered a record 58% of Germany’s electricity consumption between January and June 2026—up three percentage points from the previous year—generating 152.2 billion kWh, according to the BDEW and ZSW associations.

The main driver of this progress was offshore wind. Offshore wind power grew by 28%, onshore wind by 7%, and solar by 4%, while lower rainfall caused hydroelectric output to drop by 8%. This data highlights another piece of good news: the diversity of renewable sources allows drops in one sector to be offset by growth in others, making the overall system more resilient.

The significance extends beyond Germany. Just two decades ago, renewables were viewed as an expensive, fringe solution; today they produce more than half the electricity of an industrial nation with over 80 million inhabitants. This means less coal and gas burned, cleaner air, lower CO₂ emissions, and greater energy independence from fossil fuel imports.

The trend is repeating itself elsewhere in Europe. In Ireland, renewables met roughly half of the electricity demand in February, March, and April, with June recording a record amount of solar power on the grid. Germany’s goal is to reach 80% renewable electricity by 2030, and this year’s figures show that progress is being made at a strong pace.

A telescope buried in Antarctic ice wins the Nobel Prize in Physics

Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the world’s largest neutrino telescope, capable of detecting “ghost particles” beneath the Antarctic ice. Halzen was born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium, earned his doctorate in 1969 from the Catholic University of Leuven, and is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the United States.

Neutrinos are subatomic particles that pass through almost everything without leaving a trace, including our bodies and the entire planet. That is why they are so difficult to capture. Halzen first proposed using the ice at the South Pole to detect them in 1988. It sounded like a wild idea, but it became a reality: IceCube features 5,160 light sensors buried within a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice. On rare occasions when a neutrino collides with the ice, it produces a flash of blue light that the sensors record.

Using this instrument, the team discovered high-energy neutrinos originating from beyond the Solar System and managed to pinpoint several of their sources, such as galaxies containing supermassive black holes. The chairman of the Nobel Committee for Physics stated that Halzen’s tenacity and vision paved the way for a new branch of astronomy. Halzen is the first individual winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics since Pierre-Gilles de Gennes in 1991. He stands as an inspiring example of international cooperation and scientific persistence spanning nearly four decades.

Bewertung der Plattform Hugo Casino aus deutscher Perspektive

28 October 2026 at 18:58

was bietet das bonussystem?
